The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a motivated individual with strong technical skills to serve as a Transportation Engineer 2 (In-Training)located in Wenatchee, WA. The Transportation Engineer will serve as a team member for the North Central Region (NCR) Traffic Office to support project design and traffic operation activities. Design responsibilities include managing project delivery and developing PS&E; packages for permanent signing, illumination, ITS, signals, electrical systems, striping, and traffic control. The Transportation Engineer is of high impact and is critical to the successful completion of all phases regarding project delivery and traffic operations allowing WSDOT to operate, develop, and preserve the transportation system. This position will perform the following work:
Design, develop, and review permanent signing, illumination, ITS, signal and electrical systems, work zone traffic control, and PS&E; packages for projects within the NCR Traffic Operations Low Cost Enhancement Program or Capital Improvement and Preservation Program.
Review plans and projects developed by project offices, consultants, and local agencies.
Perform capacity analysis and signal warrant studies.
Develop and manage design delivery schedules for multiple projects using the PMRS system.
Coordinate with maintenance, project and support offices, and stakeholders regarding schedules, design details, and constructability issues.
Perform traffic operations to include operational reviews, accident analysis, signing, illumination, and pavement marking design.
Provide responses to constituents; conduct internal and external preliminary investigations, site reviews, solution identification, support documentation, and correspondence.
Use personal computer, Word, Excel, engineering software, and traffic operations programs to perform essential job functions.
Write memos, reports, and contract specifications; prepare construction schedules; monitor project expenditures and budgets, and maintain records.
Perform other duties assigned.
Required qualifications for this position are:
Strong mathematical proficiency in geometry, algebra, and trigonometry.
Effective communication skills with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods with internal and external customers.
The ability to work as part of a team, follow instructions, and accept constructive feedback.
The ability to work independently, schedule and prioritize workload, with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated knowledge and application of engineering principles to include correct application and interpretation of written materials such as policies, manuals, plans, specifications, designs, and instructions.
The capability to work any shift including evenings, weekends, and overnight stays to meet required job functions.
The ability to utilize illumination software proficiently within one year of appointment.
The ability to perform site reviews in remote locations.
A valid driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Preferred qualifications for this position are:
Knowledge of engineering principles and guidelines in evaluating traffic designs and traffic operations issues.
Knowledge of project development work such as: field reviews; evaluating designs; data analysis; preparing and reviewing reports, estimates, plans, specifications, and special provisions.
Proficient knowledge and application of project management practices.
Note: This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Transportation Engineer field, and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on qualifications. The salary levels and qualifications for each are as follows:
An ideal candidate at the Transportation Engineer 1 level ($51,300.00- $68,940.00) will have:
A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or relevant field of study).
Certification as an Engineer-In-Training.
An ideal candidate at the Transportation Engineer 2 level ($56,580.00 $76,092.00) will have:
OR Certification as an Engineer-In-Training
AND one year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent.
Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.
A Master's degree with major study in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Traffic, Transportation or a closely related field.
