The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently looking for enthusiastic engineers who have a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and proven successful in collaborative efforts. North Central Regions' Transportation Engineer positions contributes to both construction and design engineering functions for all work in the Project Engineering Office (PEO). These positions support WSDOT's mission by ensuring highway construction projects are designed and built in compliance with standard specifications and contract plans. This is accomplished in design by the preparing of plans, specifications, estimates, reports, and other documents that will be used to improve the safety, quality, and capacity on the State's Transportation System. This is accomplished in construction by collecting field data, inspecting contractor work on projects, measuring, and documenting contract work, and coordinating work with other engineering staff in the field.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
Prepare reports, contract plans, specifications, and estimates for highway projects.
Perform computer aided drafting and design using CADD software to produce Right-of-Way and design plan sheets.
Evaluate field data and/or survey data to determine quantities, elevations, coordinates, grades, and curve data.
Evaluate designs requiring analysis of accident data, traffic data, hydraulics, environmental constraints, and design standards.
Prepare reports, specifications, and estimates.
Assist office engineer with design documentation.
Serve as a project inspector on earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, drainage, and other duties, which will often require the operation of a nuclear gauge, inspection of crusher operation, and inspection of asphalt plant operations.
Inspect and direct the inspection of highway and highway structures.
Measure and record materials quantities and visually inspect material installations on project sites.
Coordinate with contractor's representatives regarding schedule.
Prepare and coordinate the preparation of contract estimates and final records.

Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
Note: Students graduating with an accepted degree prior to July 1, 2024, are eligible to apply for this position.

It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have:
Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT), or a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.
Knowledge of project development work such as: field reviews; evaluating designs; data analysis; preparing/reviewing reports, estimates, plans, specifications, and special provisions.
Proficient knowledge of project management practices.
Knowledge of basic transportation engineering principles dealing with surveying, roadway geometrics, materials testing and sampling, and computer applications (such as Microstation and In-Roads).
Knowledge of the surrounding area.
Valid Driver's License.
