Your Opportunity

This Transportation Designer role will work as a team member on small and large projects under the guidance of a Senior Engineer. The Transportation Designer will support the design of several types of project including Transportation Management Plans (Maintenance of Traffic), Signal Design Plans, Final Signing Plans, and Final Pavement Marking Plans.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting engineering and senior project staff in producing high quality work products for our municipal and state DOT clients. Tasks may include: performing engineering calculations, preparing detailed design drawings, and preparing project special provisions.

  • Using CADD (mainly MicroStation) to develop detailed design drawings for Transportation Management, Signal Design, Signing, and Pavement Marking plans.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Basic understanding of MicroStation CADD or similar product (AutoCAD Civil 3D).

  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to multi-task, prioritize, and take direction.

Education and Experience

  • 0 7 years of experience working in the industry.

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering or related field is desirable.

  • Engineering Intern (EI) accreditation with a commitment to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer in the future is a plus.

Position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.

VIEW JOBS 12/7/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-03-07T00:00 Job Description Hiring range: $51,822 - $85,000 (promotional hiring range may vary) This class is the seventh level in a ten-level Engineering Series providing advanced journey level professional engineering and construction management work and are considered subject matter experts with the highest level of knowledge, providing consultation to other engineering staff and to management. As assigned, incumbents may serve as lead workers, assigning work and monitoring work completion or may supervise professional, paraprofessional and/or support staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures. Under the direct supervision of the Transportation Planning Manager, the Senior Engineer will be the lead position in the Technical Services Unit and provide oversight of the advanced analytical functions of the Transportation Planning Division. The division is responsible for planning and administering the City's multimodal transportation plans for streets, bicycles, pedestrians, rail, and transit. The division oversees the development of the City's transportation element of the Capital Improvement Program, which supports the activities of the Transportation Department. This position will supervise a team consisting of a Planning Specialists and will perform analytical work to review traffic engineering studies submitted by private consultants for new development and for City and state transportation projects. The unit will also oversee contracts with private engineering consulting firms to conduct special planning and design studies for proposed capital projects. The position will utilize data from these traffic studies along with other city data sources to assess system safety and capacity needs in order to develop projects, countermeasures, and funding strategies to help improve the City's transportation system and protect local neighborhoods. This work is essential to ensuring orderly growth and providing adequate multimodal infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing city. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties: * Reviews development plans, rezoning requests, traffic impact studies and other transportation related issues for concurrency with City design criteria and applicable codes. * Coordinates findings with internal staff, other departments, private consultants, and external agencies (e.g., NCDOT). * Responds to citizen inquiries, performs field investigations as required, and develops solutions to transportation related problems. * Conducts special studies, prepares background reports and presents data to citizen groups and legislative bodies. * Studies multimodal transportation conditions and assesses conditions for safety and operations. * Plans, organizes, and directs work on transportation studies to plan and finance local transportation system improvements. * Manages contracts and consultants working on behalf of the division. * Organizes project scopes, issues requests for proposals, and conducts selection of consultants. * Oversees task orders and payments for each project. Typical Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in engineering or directly related field and five years of professional engineering and/or construction/project management experience in area of assignment. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Masters degree in engineering or equivalent preferred. At least eight years of progressive transportation engineering experience preferred. Licensing/Certifications * Professional Engineering (PE) Registration. * Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
