Job Description:

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Commerce Alcoholic Beverages Division.

The Alcohol Beverages Division is recruiting to hire three (3) temporary transport driver position. Hourly rate is $22.65 an hour.

Candidates are required to have a current Class A commercial driver's license (CDL); will drive a combination tractor / trailer rig and straight trucks to deliver wholesale liquor orders to retailers located in all 99 Iowa counties and must be able to safely navigate a large-sized delivery vehicle into tightly confined retail store unloading locations, often at odd angles, without causing damage to store premises or delivery vehicles. Must be able to safely back up vehicle over long distances.

The successful candidate will unload liquor deliveries into the retail customer's store location, often unassisted, may be required to unload liquor deliveries using mechanized equipment or hand unloading, must be able to manually negotiate delivery loads up store ramps, down store ramps, around corners, up flights of stairs, down flights of stairs and by use of elevators. May be required to re-load deliveries, or pieces of the delivery or pieces from a previously made delivery, onto the delivery truck, will perform a manual count or a scanned count of the delivered order with the owner / manager / employee of the retail establishment and reconcile any discrepancy with the retailer prior to leaving the store premise. May be required to obtain and safeguard payment for the delivery, will be required to make all deliveries on the scheduled route within the timeframe devised and previously proven by the Division warehouse management staff and previous history logs.

Additional responsibilities include, a pre-trip safety inspection of the delivery truck and corresponding trailer, if applicable, ensuring that the truck / trailer is supplied with the necessary equipment to ensure safe and successful delivery and unloading at all customer locations on the route, fuel the vehicle, if necessary, perform a post-trip inspection of the vehicle upon return to the Division's truck yard and prior to shift end, maintain a driving log and will be responsible for complying with any applicable state or federal Department of Transportation rules and regulations and may be required to perform general warehousing duties during peak business times, during times of warehouse labor shortages, and as scheduled duties. This position is based out of Ankeny, Iowa.

Hours are variable-based on delivery route & length. Travel, some overnight. Possible weekend / holiday hours.

The successful candidate must have a Class A CDL and be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, physical exam, functional capacity test, and motor vehicle record analysis. Must have a DOT physical card or be able to obtain one.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Experience equal to two years of full-time work operating heavy trucks or tractor-trailers exceeding four tons.
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where satisfactory completion of a truck driving program approved by the Iowa Department of Education from an accredited college or vocational school equals six months of full-time experience
