Job Summary: Northern Indiana Public Service Company is an investor-owned electric and natural gas utility serving approximately 468,000 electric customers in Northern Indiana. NIPSCO's Transmission Planning Department is responsible for the performance analysis and the future development and expansion of the NIPSCO bulk electric power system ranging in voltage level from 765kV to 34.5kV.

This position will be filled depending on experience and degree.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Job Family):

Transmission Planning Engineer Level I

  • Tests future transmission system expansion plans necessary to reliably and economically serve NIPSCO customers in compliance with the transmission planning standards of NERC and NIPSCO. Recommends needed solutions or corrective action plans to leadership.

  • Provides technical analysis and solution on the following: Steady-State, Stability, Short-Circuit, Geomagnetic, and Electromagnetic Transient of future transmission system performance including stressed case and contingency. Recommends needed solutions or corrective action plans to leadership.

  • Supports execution of company electric infrastructure modernization program by developing specific projects and details that meet system needs. Individual Project cost may exceed $15 million.

  • Updates steady-state, dynamic, short-circuit, geomagnetic, and electromagnetic transient transmission models for leadership review and use by the Transmission Planning department. Understands electrical characteristics and makes updates to reflect the changing system.

  • An active participant of NIPSCO in ReliabilityFirst (RF) regional transmission assessment activities such as preparing audit responses to RF to meet NIPSCO's compliance obligations and providing updates to leadership.

  • Provides technical support on execution, physical capabilities, requirements and state of the electric transmission system to various company departments including Transmission Operations, Electric System Dispatch, Engineering, Technical Services, Rates and Regulatory, Legal-Regulatory, FERC & MISO Policy, Asset Management, etc.

Transmission Planning Engineer Level II (includes level I duties plus):

  • Develops future transmission system expansion plans necessary to reliably and economically serve NIPSCO customers in compliance with the transmission planning standards of NERC and NIPSCO.

  • Presents transmission system expansion plans to management and other interested parties.

  • Addresses the system adequacy and integration requirements of service inquiries in coordination with electric customers, electric cooperatives and municipals, NIPSCO economic development and major account representatives.

  • Participates as a representative of NIPSCO in the RTO regional transmission planning activities including transmission expansion, generation interconnection, generation retirement, transmission service requests, and market efficiency.

  • Ensures through annual assessments compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and FERC Forms & Orders.

  • Participates in all aspects (engineering design, schedule, cost, etc.) of the development execution of company electric infrastructure modernization program

  • Builds and maintains steady-state, dynamic, short-circuit, geomagnetic, and electromagnetic transient transmission models

  • May represent NIPSCO in Reliability First regional transmission assessment activities such as providing audit testimony

  • Provides recommendations to various company departments including Transmission Operations, Electric System Dispatch, Engineering, Technical Services, Rates and Regulatory, Legal-Regulatory, FERC & MISO Policy, Asset Management, etc.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in developing future transmission system expansion plans necessary to reliably and economically serve NIPSCO customers in compliance with the transmission planning standards of NERC and NIPSCO.

  • Analyzes the Steady-State, Stability, Short-Circuit, Geomagnetic, and Electromagnetic Transient of future transmission system performance including stressed case and contingency and suggests direction

Transmission Planning Engineer Level III (includes level II duties plus):

  • Expert level development of future transmission system expansion plans necessary to reliably and economically serve NIPSCO customers in compliance with the transmission planning standards of NERC and NIPSCO.

  • Recommends and provides transmission system expansion plans to corporate management and other interested parties.

  • Provides expert analytics of the Steady-State, Stability, Short-Circuit, Geomagnetic, and Electromagnetic Transient of future transmission system performance including stressed case and contingency and suggests direction

  • Expert level building and maintaining of steady-state, dynamic, short-circuit, geomagnetic, and electromagnetic transient transmission models.

  • Mentors engineers

Transmission Planning Senior Engineer (includes level III duties plus):

  • Independently develops future transmission system expansion plans necessary to reliably and economically serve NIPSCO customers in compliance with the transmission planning standards of NERC and NIPSCO.

  • Leads the development of transmission system expansion plans for corporate management and other interested parties.

  • Leads service inquiries with electric customers, electric cooperatives and municipals, NIPSCO economic development and major account representatives

  • Works independently without guidance

Qualifications:

Transmission Planning Engineer

Level I

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in problem-solving, decision-making, quantitative/qualitative analysis, oral & written communication and building partnerships

Level II

  • All level I requirements

  • Demonstrates knowledge of electric system operation, wholesale interconnection agreements, generator interconnection agreements, RTO operations

  • At least 2+ years of professional experience in electric utility industry in a position similar to the current role, preferably within transmission planning, operations or operations planning

  • Engineer in Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (PE), etc. (Not Required)

  • Graduate level education, i.e. MS, MBA, PhD, etc. (Not Required)

Level III

  • All Requirements for Level II

  • At least 5+ years of professional experience in electric utility industry in a position similar to the this role, preferably within transmission planning, operations or operations planning

  • Demonstrates proficiency in all Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proven ability to efficiently and effectively manage Transmission Planning projects, including: Coordinating all engineering activities, Ensuring all commitments and deadlines are met, communicating with all key stakeholders, Tracking all expenditures and costs

  • Champions changes to department processes, policies and procedures. Takes initiative on identifying and leading process improvements.

Level Senior

  • All Requirements for Level III

  • At least 8+ years of professional experience in electric utility industry in a position similar to the current role, preferably within transmission planning, operations or operations planning

  • Demonstrates ability to coach and train lower level engineers

  • Demonstrates ability to lead and influence others. Substitutes for manager in meetings and presentations. Assists to coach co-workers through conflict and complicated issues.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Transmission Planning Engineer (All Levels):

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: (Word, Excel, Access)

  • Familiarity with computer programming: (C, Visual Basic, MatLab, Python or Fortran)

  • Ability to carry out progressively challenging and important assignments

  • Good written/verbal communication skills.

  • Works well in an individual or team environment.

Preferred for Selection:

Prior experience with power system analysis software such as Siemens PSSE, GE PSLF, PowerWorld, PowerGem TARA, Aspen OneLiner, PSCAD

Master's degree with emphasis in power system analysis qualifies as two years' experience

Education

Required for Selection:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred for Selection:

  • Master Of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering with primary emphasis in power system analysis

  • Experience with power system analysis including powerflow, dynamic/transient stability, symmetrical components, and engineering economics

$91,000.00 - $136,600.00
