About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

This job is responsible for corporate oversight and program management of the Transmission Vegetation Management program throughout the FirstEnergy territory. This job is responsible for safety, operational performance and training, TVM Application support, environmental tasks, and reporting, while also ensuring compliance with the FAC-003 Vegetation Management Standard and Internal Controls.

NOTE: Preferred reporting location is a FirstEnergy regional headquarters, or within the FirstEnergy footprint and at a Service or Training Center location approved by the hiring manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety as a core value.

  • Assist in updating, improving, and performing Operational Training to lead to improved Operational Performance, including updating training PowerPoint presentations, agendas, and user manuals as needed.

  • Assist in QlikView reporting, metrics, documentation, and quality control reviews as needed.

  • Assist in TVM Activities as necessary, including but not limited to:

  • Tree Outage Investigation Reviews (iTOA calls, TVM Application review, Investigation follow-up calls, quarterly iTOA review, etc.)

  • Scheduled Outage Risk Assessments

  • Points of Interconnection and One-Line Diagram Reviews

  • Deenergized Line Reviews

  • ROW Area of Interest Quarterly Reporting and Review

  • Master Schedule, Work Plan, Bid File reviews and updates

  • Corridor Modifications, map fixes, and program repairs

  • QlikView quality control reviews

  • Environmental Tasks, such as Monarch CCAA, Power in Pollinators, Right of Way as Habitat Working Group, TreeLine USA, and other Industry Initiatives including coordinating Pollinator Week activities

  • Coordinating mapping updates for Threatened and Endangered species, as needed

  • Assist in TVM Application processes and reviews, including but not limited to:

  • TVM Application support as necessary

  • TVM Application program creation and updates for various work activities

  • Production data change requests, corrections from the field, etc.

  • Assist with TVM Application reviews for TVM Compliance Audits, including IROL, Mitigations, Transient Study Locations, etc.

  • Assist in documenting and testing enhancements and defects in GIS View and the TVM Application with Gatekeeper and IT Solutions

  • Assist in creating/reviewing TVM Navigational Tools for Quarterly Release

  • Maintain document control and assist with updating TVM forms, templates, talking points, and brochures

  • Assist with SharePoint Site organization, updates, and reviews as needed

  • Attend or lead TVM Operational Calls as needed to review TVM deadlines, process or procedure changes, upcoming training, etc.

  • Attend meetings as necessary for the development, communication, training, and implementation of procedures and processes

  • Work with other business units as necessary, including IT Solutions, Transmission Mapping, Transmission Maintenance, FERC Agreements, Transmission Reliability, Document Production, Communications Services, etc.

  • Assisting in performing field observations or field inspections, as required

  • Support storm restoration activities as required including 24-hour on-call availability

  • This position may require periodic intercompany travel and occasional overnight stays.

  • Responsible for large geographical areas throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and New York.

Qualifications at Trans Forestry Specialist level:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Forestry Science or related discipline (agriculture, environmental, business or law), or associate degree in Forestry Science or related discipline (agriculture, environmental, business or law) along with 6 years of related job experience, or High School Diploma (or GED) along with 10 years related work experience. Related work experience is utility vegetation or right of way management.

  • Must be an ISA Certified Arborist/Utility Specialist preferred or obtain certification within the first six months of holding the position.

  • Must hold a State pesticide license or obtain one within the first six months of holding the position.

  • Field experience in utility forestry operations or related discipline preferred.

  • Strong background in urban forestry, plant identification, hazard tree evaluation, pesticide applications and communication skills

  • Excellent ability to communicate and present himself/herself in a professional manner.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Strong Interpersonal skills to gain cooperation with internal and external customers.

  • Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Excellent note taking and organizational skills, and the demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.

  • Technical writing skills and experience a plus.

  • Full proficiency with PC software applications which include Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneNote, and Skype. Microsoft Access a plus.

  • Proficiency of SAP, GIS View, CREWS, VGMS, QlikView, and Power On computer systems a plus.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to multi-task with competing priorities, provide both internal and external quality customer service and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Possess leadership qualities that allow one to provide effective guidance to others, coach others in effective decision making and facilitate meetings.

  • Understand the Company's Accident Prevention Handbook and possess the ability to work safely.

  • Must have a personal vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required, possessing a valid driver's license.

  • Possess the physical ability to perform field surveys and inspections in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to build relationships and credibility, and provide staff support to management and higher levels of professionals, as needed.

  • Demonstrated understanding of vegetation management compliance, policies, and procedures in addition to the willingness to teach, explain, and implement with others.

Qualifications at the Adv Trans Forestry Specialist level:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Forestry Science or related discipline (agriculture or environmental), or Associate's degree in Forestry Science or related discipline (agriculture or environmental) along with 6 plus years of related job experience, or High School Diploma (or GED) along with 8-10 years related work experience. Related work experience is utility vegetation or right of way management. International society of arboriculture, (Certified Arborist / utility specialist preferred.)
  • Prior experiences leading teams or contractors and prior background in taking on responsibilities over and above that listed in the qualifications at the Transmissioni Forestry Speciailst listed above.

About the Opportunity This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The Transmission Lines Engineer designs a variety of wood and steel transmission structures and structure foundations and calculates wire sags and clearances using a robust industry-standard software program known as PLS-CADD. The Engineer directs survey crews and drafting personnel to gather and record data for transmission line design and provides assistance with the preparation of plans for real estate and right of way acquisition, employing skills in GIS and AutoCAD software. The ability to work independently as well as in teams is a must as the Engineer will coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Transmission Siting and Permitting, Substations, Project Management, Forestry, Real Estate and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies located across six states. The Engineer calculates NESC clearance requirements, develops design packages for construction, creates bills-of-material for transmission line projects, creates standards and associated process flows for transmission structures and lines, and assists in implementation activities. Other duties include analyzing transmission line issues and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options. Responsibilities include: * Developing and maintaining a safe environment for transmission lines to ensure the safety of co-workers, contractors, work crews and the general public. * Creating engineering designs and standards for transmission line projects that include wood and steel structure drawings, line plan and profile, wire arrangements, field reports, transmission switch drawings and wire sag charts. * Directing survey crews and drafting personnel to gather and record data for transmission line design. * Preparing bills-of-material and specifications to procure materials for a transmission line project. * Developing and assembling design packages including work scope for construction. The preferred candidate will have working knowledge of PLS-CADD or the ability and desire to learn PLS-CADD. * Supporting work crews during construction including office work and field visits. * Reviewing transmission line encroachments to ensure NESC clearance requirements are met. Coordinating encroachment responses with ROW Services and Transmission Line Maintenance personnel and ensure the public safety is protected. * Preparing drawings and documentation necessary to support the applications for engineering permits including highway crossings, railroad crossings, FAA and other related engineering permits. * Analyzing structure assemblies and equipment issues and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options. * Communicating across business units to ensure project milestones and project in-service dates are met. * Working with outside engineering consultants, vendors, and equipment manufacturers. * Reviewing manufacturer drawings for compliance with specifications. * Assisting ROW Services in the acquisition of transmission line easements by coordinating the preparation of sketches, maps, exhibits and easement plans. * Preparing and reviewing cost estimates for transmission line projects. * Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities. Storm response duties may include time out of the office for extended stays. * Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy's high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance through responsible and proactive work efforts. * May be required to travel throughout the FE system and to other industry-related activities as necessary supporting FirstEnergy transmission initiatives. Qualifications inculde: * Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical) from an ABET accredited school required. Civil Engineering is preferred.
