TRANSLATOR/BILINGUAL TECHNICIAN

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Coordinator of Instruction, using a considerable level of clerical/secretarial and translation skills, performs a wide variety of complex clerical and instructional assistant work within broadly defined policies and procedures; acts as principal translator (Spanish) for the District and performs other related work as needed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The incumbents in this classification perform a wide variety of complex clerical duties requiring the exercise of independent judgment in interpreting and applying practices and procedures or in modifying existing methods to complete assignments. Positions in this class must be able to assist in developing teaching aids and instructional materials and make highly skilled translations of written material into Spanish or Spanish into English.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of complex clerical and skilled typing work; types and translates into Spanish letters, reports, bulletins, handbooks, questionnaires and other material; compiles information and statistics for a variety of reports; answers inquiries from the general public, District employees and administrators and from non-English proficient and limited English proficient parents regarding the District's Bilingual Education Program; assists in the development, preparation and distribution of instructional materials and teaching aide; maintains a variety of files and records; may make home visits to non-English proficient parents; may translate at public meetings; assists in assessing the Spanish fluency of bilingual applicants for employment; assists in the coordination of the District's Bilingual Teacher Waiver Program the Bilingual Advisory Committee, the District's Spanish language training program for teachers and the District's proficiency testing for students.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school.

Supplemented by courses in clerical office practices.

Experience: One year of responsible experience in performing complex clerical work involving the translating of written material from English into Spanish.

Knowledge of: Modern office practices and procedures, business English; proper grammar in the oral and written use of both English and Spanish.

Ability to: Maintain records and reports' perform complex clerical duties and work independently under limited supervision; operate various office machines including video display terminals and microcomputers; understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures and policies; establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, students, teachers and other employees; speak, read and write English and Spanish fluently and be able to perform oral and written translations.

Physical Standards

The work environment and physical demands of the positions as described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a position in this clerical category. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position employees are subject to constant interruption and are in direct contact with the public, students and employees.

Negative interactions resulting from these contacts can result in stressful situations. These positions may be high volume positions and may work without direct and/or constant supervision. While the noise level in an office environment is usually quiet, a school site office may be somewhat louder. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens, body fluids and communicable disease.

Physical Demands: The physical demands of these positions include the ability to sit for extended periods of time.

These positions require some walking and standing as well as bending and reaching at, below and above shoulder level. Lifting, pushing or pulling of objects generally not exceeding twenty pounds may also be required. Repetitive use of fingers and hands to operate a keyboard and other office equipment is necessary, as is hearing and speaking ability sufficient to provide information via phone, intercom and personal contact.

Specific vision abilities including close vision, depth perception and the ability to focus are required. The ability to learn and administer first aid and CPR is required at the school site.

To qualify to be placed on an eligibility list, a candidate must obtain a passing score on each test part of the examination process. Final scores will be obtained by combining the relative weights of scores on each test part. If Veteran's credit is claimed, proof of status (DD214) must be submitted to the Classified Personnel Office at the same time the application form is submitted or prior to testing.

The life of the eligibility list is six months. The eligibility list will be used to fill current and future full-time vacancies. The Personnel Commission is seeking an qualified and enthusiastic bilingual-biliterate Spanish individual for a full-time position. The Translator/Bilingual Technician is required to use a considerable level of clerical, secretarial and translating skills to perform a wide variety of complex clerical and instructional assistant work within broadly defined policies and procedures.

The Translator/Bilingual Technician also acts as the principal translator (Spanish) for the District and performs other related work as needed. The current vacancy is for a 40 hours/week, 10.42-month position with paid holidays, sick leave, vacation, and health insurance benefits. The District offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision and life insurance.
