If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for enforcing Federal Criminal and Civil laws that protect life, liberty and the property of citizens. Typical work assignments will include:
Accurately translating a variety of documents from Spanish into English and English into Spanish
Certifying translations to be introduced as evidence in court hearings or trials
Accurately translating audio and audio/video recordings
Translating materials at all levels of difficulty and subject matter (e.g., legal documents, forensic reports, medical correspondence, financial reports)
Drafting correspondence and assisting others with drafting of official correspondence
Providing summaries and sight translations of voluminous court documents
Reviewing and evaluating transcriptions and translations done by the defense to determine accuracy
Assisting in the preparation of technical glossaries, annotated reference documents, and other linguistic aids for review by agency components.
You must become a Certified Court Interpreter by the Administrative Office of the US Courts in the Spanish language. If you are certified, please include a copy of your certification with your application package.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the federal service, which could have been gained in the federal, public or private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing such tasks as: translating material such as birth and baptismal certificates, family bible records, claims; extracting information and summarizes the info in English and Spanish; translating medical records.

Education: One of the following types of education:

J.D. or LL.B; a Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in law, criminal justice, public administration, linguistics, or a closely related field. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Translator.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

In order to qualify based on a combination, a combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education as described above, which when combined, equal 100% of the requirements. Only graduate education in excess of the first full year may be used in this calculation.

Selective Placement Factor(s): A selective placement factor is determined to be essential for successful performance in this position. Those candidates who do not meet the following selective placement factor will be rated "not qualified" for the position.
