As a Transit Operator you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service while efficiently and safely transporting passengers to their proper destinations in a courteous, safe and timely manner. As you create, promote, and maintain relationships with passengers and fellow employees, you will promote a positive partnership through your service to Longview, Kelso and the surrounding community.

YOU HAVE

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • At least 5 years driving experience with a valid driver's license

  • Strong work ethic and desire to serve others

  • Ability to work split shifts, holidays, weekends, and evenings

  • Ability to pass an FTA drug screen and a DOT physical

  • Ability to safely operate a large vehicle under varying traffic conditions.

Safety sensitive positions will be subject to the random drug and alcohol policy per the Department of Transportation federal regulations. A pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check will be conducted.

Essential Job Duties

  • Being at your assigned location on time, in uniform, and ready to work.

  • Operate public transit buses on specified routes and time schedules, collect passenger fares, issue and collect transfers, and provide fare and schedule information to passengers.

  • Provide information to passengers on buses or at transit facilities and stops, concerning transit routes, city street locations, points of interest, time schedules, public buildings and business locations; and provide basic first-aid care when conditions warrant.

  • Ensure passenger safety by enforcing transit passenger rules.

  • Assist passengers with physical disabilities and secure wheelchair passengers.

  • Care for and turn in lost-and-found articles.

Additional duties include vehicle pre-trip checking; replenishing supplies

on transit buses and driver relief vehicles; properly completing accident/incident reports; properly completing timesheets; completing employment and transit related training; participating in the Guest Rider program; deliver or pick up transit vehicles from the transit base, repair facilities, or locations on routes; participate in special events and/or operate buses on special routes that involve or promote public transit; review, understand, and adhere to City and transit policies and procedures; participate in meetings with supervisors and general staff meetings. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

If selected from this recruitment, you must be available to attend full-time training, possibly out-of-town for CDL training. Already have your CDL with air brake and passenger endorsements? We'll move you right to the next step of training!

  • As a first step in the recruitment process, candidates will be invited to a "Day in the Life of a Bus Driver" introductory session.

  • Candidates that are invited to continue the recruitment process will be asked to take a written and video exam. Final candidates will then be invited to an oral interview.

  • Candidates selected from the oral interview that do not have all CDL requirements will be invited to sign a Conditional Offer of Employment where they must complete

    1. a pre-employment DOT Physical;


    1. obtain a Class B CDL learner's permit (CLP), including passing written exams for General Knowledge, Passenger endorsement, and Air Brakes restriction removed endorsement.

  • 3)Sign the City of Longview CDL Training Payback Agreement.

These items will be required prior to receiving a Final Contingent Offer of Employment. Candidates successfully hired after a Final Contingent Offer will be reimbursed for their CLP testing fees and DOT physical exam.

  • Selected candidates must be available to attend training daily Monday Friday, and Saturday if needed.

  • Transit Operators typically begin as an Extra Board Operator and are expected to drive any shift and any route including evenings, some holidays, weekends, mornings, and split shifts on the five days of service they bid to work.

  • Extra Board Operator schedules can change with little or no notice and will vary from day to day.

  • More senior Transit Operators work set weekly schedules.

  • RiverCities Transit's current operating hours begin at 5:30 a.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m.

  • Streets within urban area and scheduled bus routes.

  • Two-way radio transmission and mobile data terminals and ability to operate and communicate using this equipment.

  • Passenger safety rules.

  • City and department policies and procedures.

Skills:

  • Operate transit vehicle safely with passengers in an urban environment.

  • Deal courteously with the public and fellow employees.

  • Be available by telephone and report to work on short notice and during an emergency.

  • Stay calm under adverse conditions.

  • Read maps and understand verbal direction, maintain vehicle inspection sheets, prepare incident/accident reports, maintain ridership records, hourly and daily totals and monitor and count types of passengers.

Req ID: 188007 JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible facilitating communications through appropriate operation of one or all of the following: the telephone console (switchboard); physician answering service; overhead paging; two-way radios; and pager system. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Operate a telephone console (switchboard), directing incoming operator-assisted and outgoing calls to appropriate individual, departments and outside contacts; respond to emergency codes; dispatch security; provide information to people in lobby. May also be required to notify by overhead, two-way radio and beeper system. Overhead paging as requested. 2. Extend and respond appropriately to all calls, codes, alarm panels and disaster plans wherever needed. 3. May be required to operation physician's answering service and handle trouble reports by working directly with the physicians. 4. Additional duties may include: announcements as needed, assisting with directories, keying in daily telephone statistics, saying the evening prayer, announcing visiting hours are over, receiving house census from nursing supervisors, other routine clerical/data entry tasks as requested. 5.
