YOU HAVE

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • At least 5 years driving experience with a valid driver's license

  • Strong work ethic and desire to serve others

  • Ability to work split shifts, holidays, weekends, and evenings

  • Ability to pass an FTA drug screen and a DOT physical

  • Ability to safely operate a large vehicle under varying traffic conditions.

Safety sensitive positions will be subject to the random drug and alcohol policy per the Department of Transportation federal regulations. A pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check will be conducted.

Position Description Information:

The Transit Operator is responsible for the operation of fixed route public transit vehicles for the City of Longview.

All Transit Operators begin as Transit Operator Trainees. Trainees must successfully complete classroom and fixed route driver training. The duration of training depends on the qualifications and skills of the Trainee. During the training period, Trainees do not have regularly scheduled or guaranteed hours, but are expected to be available Monday through Saturday for training. Trainees do not receive any benefits other than those required by law. Upon successful completion of training, Trainees are automatically re-classified as Transit Operators and begin to receive benefits based on work schedules.

Transit Operators bid for shifts based on seniority at least twice per year. Transit Operators are guaranteed a minimum of 27 hours of work per week and two scheduled days off per week (which may not be consecutive days). New Transit Operators typically receive the Extra Board Operator shift, a semi on-call shift relied upon to drive routes in the absence of other Transit Operators. Extra Board Operator work hours are not specified in advance since the assignment fills shifts on-call as needed. Known work for Extra Board Operators is assigned at 4:00 pm the day before the work: additional work may be assigned at any time. Transit Operators with higher seniority typically receive shifts with a set weekly schedule.

Essential Job Duties

  • Operate public transit buses on specified routes and time schedules.

  • Collect passenger fares, issue and collect transfers, and provide fare and schedule information to passengers.

  • Provide information to passengers on buses or at transit facilities and stops, concerning transit routes, city street locations, points of interest, time schedules, public buildings, and business locations.

  • Properly use two-way radios with dispatch and other staff.

  • Provide basic first aid care when conditions warrant.

  • Ensure passenger safety by enforcing transit passenger rules.

  • Assist passengers with disabilities and secure passengers using wheelchairs.

  • Ability to be at the scheduled assigned locations on time, in uniform and ready for work.

  • Perform vehicle pre-trip and post-trip checks.

  • Replenish supplies on the transit buses and driver relief vehicles.

  • Properly complete accident/incident reports and forms and complete timesheets.

  • Ability to complete all assigned and required employment and transit related trainings.

  • Deliver and pick up transit vehicles from the transit base or other locations.

  • May participate in the Guest Rider program.

  • Inform a supervisor of repairs needed.

  • Participate in special events and or operate buses on special routes that involve or promote public transit.

  • Understand and adhere to City and transit policies and procedures.

  • Attend scheduled meetings with supervisors and general staff meetings.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Transit Operator Trainee:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent AND have a minimum of five years licensed driving experienceOR a combination of education, training and experience which would provide the required skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job as determined by the department.

  • Must pass a pre-employment Transit Operator video based exam by Ergometrics.

  • Current commercial driver's license (CDL) holder with one year experience driving bus or vehicle(s) of similar size is preferred.

  • For those without a CDL that includes both the Passenger Endorsement and Air Brake Restriction removed, must obtain a Class B CDL learner's permit (CLP), including passing written exams for General Knowledge, Passenger, and Air Brakes before receiving a Final Contingent Offer of Employment with the City. (Commercial license permit requirements: https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/cdlcdip.html.) The City has a program to provide CDL training in exchange for a commitment to work a minimum number of years.

  • Must possess a valid State of Washington L&I First Aid/CPR Card or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire (or as assigned).

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical exam, and background check.

Transit Operator: Successful completion of the City's transit operator training program and possession of a valid CDL with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction removed

Ideal Candidate Information

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Have a working knowledge of the streets within urban areas and bus routes.

  • Ability to operate mobile data terminals as well as the ability to communicate effectively using a two-way radio.

  • Communicate and ensure all passenger safety rules and regulations are being followed.

  • Must operate the transit vehicles safely with passengers in an urban environment.

  • Provide excellent customer service to the public and fellow employees.

  • Be available by telephone and can report to work on short notice and during an emergency.

  • Ability to stay calm under adverse conditions.

  • Ability to read and understand maps and verbal directions.

  • Maintain vehicle inspection sheets, prepare incident/accident reports, enter ridership records/totals and count types of passengers.

  • Must possess basic math skills.
