Transit Assistance Program (TAP) Coordinator - Part-Time (20 hours per week)

1381 South 1st Street Location: Onsite Position

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT & DESCRIPTION

Sacred Heart Community Service (SHCS), located in San José, CA, is looking for a Part-Time, Transit Assistance Program (TAP) Coordinator in the Essential Services Department. The TAP Coordinator is a member of the team of staff and volunteers who welcome, orient, and engage community members in our programs and opportunities for involvement. The position is the face of Sacred Heart to the community. The ideal candidate will be self-directed and flexible and exhibit strong communication, efficient administrative and multi-tasking skills, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to stay calm and collected in, at times, an occasionally chaotic environment. Most importantly, they must be passionate about our mission - to build a community free from poverty. For more than 60 years, SHCS has been one of the leading institutions addressing poverty in Santa Clara County through a strategy that combines meeting basic needs, offering tools for self-sufficiency, and providing opportunities for the wider community to get involved and take action.

Position Summary

The Transit Assistance Program (TAP) is a countywide program provided in partnership with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) and the County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency to help low-income households obtain affordable transportation. The Part Time TAP Coordinator supports SHCS's efforts to develop, administer, and evaluate TAP, which provides subsidized monthly bus passes to low-income households. The TAP Coordinator is a member of the Welcome Center program and participates in direct services and other team activities, as needed, and supports efforts to engage members in community organizing and policy advocacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

TAP Program (80-90%)

  • Administers monthly TAP passes, including reviewing applications, collecting payment, counting correct change, and filling out receipts.

  • Coordinates with multiple Sacred Heart Community Service programs to maintain an active list of eligible TAP participants.

  • Supports creating and maintaining TAP documents, including policies and procedures and program forms.

  • Completes monthly reconciliation of TAP passes.

  • Data entry is conducted into internal agency and VTA network databases.

  • Train and supervise volunteers and interns and support the development of their organizational and community leadership.

Essential Services (5-10%)

  • Works collaboratively to develop and implement efforts to ensure member involvement and leadership development within the Essential Services department.

  • Identifies and engages members, including connecting people to organizing committees, conducting 1:1 conversations, and assessing and implementing community engagement opportunities with volunteers and people receiving services within Sacred Heart Service.

  • Engages and develops program volunteers by providing education, training, feedback, and support.

  • Participates in staff and team development activities and engages in continuous learning, evaluation, and professional development.

Agency Participation and Leadership (5-10%)

  • Support the planning of and participation in team and agency-wide meetings, events, and outreach efforts.

  • Attends staff meetings, retreats, and other team and other mandatory organization events.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Strong commitment to our vision of a community united to ensure every child and adult is free from poverty.

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, public health, or a related field or equivalent work experience in a related field.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including delivering challenging messages with empathy and respect and an interest in serving individuals from diverse backgrounds experiencing high-stress situations.

  • Outstanding customer service skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a flexible, compassionate, supportive, fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive, solution-oriented approach.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and to work independently with limited supervision when necessary.

  • Ability to occasionally work weekend days, especially during April, November, and December.

  • The TAP Coordinator's standard working hours are Monday to Thursday in person at the agency's 1381 South First Street location.

  • The position requires computer use for up to 5 hours per day. Reasonable accommodation can be made to enable individuals with differing abilities to perform essential functions.

  • Must complete a DMV and a background check and qualify to be insured under the Sacred Heart Community Service driving policy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual/biliterate (Spanish, Vietnamese, or Chinese).

  • 1-2 years experience using Salesforce, HMIS, VTA database.

  • 1-2 years experience coordinating projects and creating policy and procedures.

  • Experience accepting large amounts of cash payments.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The position is non-exempt, part-time and reports to the Welcome Center Manager.

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time non-exempt, hourly position, starting at $25 an hour.
