Located at the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Station in Derwood MD, we seek a dedicated and energetic individual to fill the role of Transfer Station Operator. The Transfer Station Operator is responsible to greet customers at the Public Unloading Facility (PUF), Upper Recycle Lot, Transfer Station Tipping Floor, and other locations on site to direct individuals to the appropriate areas for recyclable material or solid waste drop-off. The Transfer Station Operator also inspects the material for compliance with the Transfer Station's Solid Waste Permit and Montgomery County's Recycling Regulations. In addition to greeting the customers, the Transfer Station Operator also directs traffic, maintains safe traffic patterns, answers customers' questions, assists with off-loading of bulky materials, operates a fork-lift, loads trailers with recyclable materials, removes rims from tires, disassembles appliances for non-ferrous metal recycling, maintains a clean work area, and assists with overall Site housekeeping. In addition to PUF and Upper Recycle Lot responsibilities, the Transfer Station Operator will also be trained to act as a Tipping Floor Attendant directing solid waste vehicles into the Tipping Buildings.

This position will require outside work and in all types of inclement weather. The work schedule for this position includes days, evenings and weekends.

Position Requirements

The requirements for this position are:

  • High School education or GED

  • One year's work experience in a similar field

  • The ability to operate a fork lift

  • Good communication and customer relations skills

  • Good mechanical aptitude

  • The ability to work with hand and power tools

  • The ability to lift fifty (50) pounds

  • The ability to work outside and in the elements

SUMMARY: Responsible for ensuring the proper, safe and environmentally compliant operations, maintenance and administration of a multi-faceted Covanta operated Transfer Station through management of and interaction with Covanta Transfer Station employees, sub-contracted operators and/or waste transporters as well as interaction with regional and corporate management and support personnel. Work with Transfer Station management team and employees to leverage resources and maximize efficiency of the Covanta Transfer Station. Work with appropriate facility, area, regional and corporate accounting staff to ensure accurate and timely budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting of the Covanta Transfer Station. Develop long term strategic plans, relationships and partnerships to increase the value delivered to Covanta through the operation of the Covanta Transfer Station. Operate the Covanta Transfer Station under a culture of innovation, constant improvement, and dedication to the safety of all Transfer Station personnel, customers and vendors. Engage with the Client/Facility Owner, as required, to maintain compliance with the O&M Agreement. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES BY PERCENT: Responsible for ensuring safe daily operation and maintenance of a Covanta Transfer Station while ensuring consistent site housekeeping and compliance with all local, state and federal rules, regulations, laws and permits. These responsibilities include leadership and ongoing development of Shift Supervisors to ensure consistency and alignment in processes / procedures and that resource allocation is optimized. Also responsible for daily collaboration with the Maintenance Manager to ensure Operations and Maintenance are aligned on all projects and equipment issues impacting the transfer operation and facility/site requirements 20% Responsible for active input, communication and oversight of monthly forecast process and annual budget process for the Covanta Transfer Station assets. Responsible for understanding the facility P&L and participate with Facility Manager and Financial Business partner as required on monthly forecast and reconciliation 20% Responsible for interaction with sub contracted waste haulers and CSX Train Master to ensure smooth and consistent movement and processing of daily waste deliveries 20% Responsible to support or lead any safety and/or infrastructure related projects and related timelines and for interaction and communication with Covanta EFW facility team to ensure smooth efficient processing and return of all rail cars to ensure efficient operations of Covanta Transfer Station 15% Responsible for interaction with Regional Management team and Business Management team in developing and executing long term strategic plans regarding over all presence and strategy within a specific market area.
