Located at the Montgomery County Solid Waste Transfer Station in Derwood MD, we seek a dedicated and energetic individual to fill the role of Transfer Station Operator. The Transfer Station Operator is responsible to greet customers at the Public Unloading Facility (PUF), Upper Recycle Lot, Transfer Station Tipping Floor, and other locations on site to direct individuals to the appropriate areas for recyclable material or solid waste drop-off. The Transfer Station Operator also inspects the material for compliance with the Transfer Station's Solid Waste Permit and Montgomery County's Recycling Regulations. In addition to greeting the customers, the Transfer Station Operator also directs traffic, maintains safe traffic patterns, answers customers' questions, assists with off-loading of bulky materials, operates a fork-lift, loads trailers with recyclable materials, removes rims from tires, disassembles appliances for non-ferrous metal recycling, maintains a clean work area, and assists with overall Site housekeeping. In addition to PUF and Upper Recycle Lot responsibilities, the Transfer Station Operator will also be trained to act as a Tipping Floor Attendant directing solid waste vehicles into the Tipping Buildings.
This position will require outside work and in all types of inclement weather. The work schedule for this position includes days, evenings and weekends.
The requirements for this position are:
High School education or GED
One year's work experience in a similar field
The ability to operate a fork lift
Good communication and customer relations skills
Good mechanical aptitude
The ability to work with hand and power tools
The ability to lift fifty (50) pounds
The ability to work outside and in the elements
