General Summary

The Manager of Training and Professional Development, reporting to the Chief Talent and Organizational Development Officer, will be responsible for the development and delivery of both large and small scale training and professional development solutions. This position will be focused primarily on training and development but may encompass Organizational Development initiatives as well. This position also concentrates on: competency development, performance management, needs assessment, benchmarking, career pathing, new hire orientation/ integration, coaching, facilitating and succession planning. This position will be based out of the Los Angeles office but will require regular travel to Orange County.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Performance Consultant, forming a collaborative relationship with various Firm leaders and professionals to analyze performance gaps, identify needs (business, performance, training, and work environment needs), and present recommendations of solutions based on findings to clients.

  • Develop and implement an organization wide learning strategy, including appropriate adoption and integration of e-learning solutions.

  • Identify associate career development needs, and design and manage the implementation of programs relating to attorney career development.

  • Research, assess, recommend, develop, implement, and deliver specific training solutions for all Firm stakeholders, including consulting to and partnering with subject matter experts to develop course content.

  • Leading and participating in the design, development, and delivery of in-house training programs.

  • Developing and managing relationships with external advisors and service providers in the development, implementation, and management of legal and professional competencies, programs and practices;

  • Administer and manage the Firm's MCLE program, including sourcing and developing programs.

  • Oversee administration of performance evaluation processes for all professional. Review, edit, and prepare evaluations for distribution.

  • Administer and manage new hire integration programs for Firm professionals, including conducting face-to-face meetings with senior professionals.

  • Design and facilitate training programs to improve performance through organization-wide initiatives and intact team sessions.

  • Act as project lead on a variety of Firm initiatives and projects.

  • Manage vendor relationships and materials including the development and then maintenance of portions of the consultant, coach, trainer and instrument database.

  • Support organizational development initiatives.

  • Manage the exit interview process firm-wide.

  • Work with the Associate Committee to address career and general professional development feedback from associates and to update and enhance new associate and orientation and training programs.

  • Teaming with recruiting members to devise and deploy on-boarding programs for non-partner lateral hires.

  • Assessing competitive trends and innovations in professional development and training, and correspondingly recommending, developing and implementing prudent strategies and methodologies;

  • Advancing a culture that promotes diversity and inclusion, collaboration, and a commitment to professional excellence;

  • Develop and maintain annual budget for Professional Development initiatives and training; manage monthly reporting and variance analysis; administer department contracts.

  • Monitor current trends and best practices in legal talent and professional development - implement new innovations, as appropriate, to ensure the firm's efforts are innovative and cutting edge.

Job Requirements

  • 57 years training design and delivery

  • 23 years measurement and evaluation

  • 35 years supervisory experience

  • General knowledge and understanding of OD principles and practices

  • JD or relevant Master's Degree (e.g. MBA) and law firm and professional service experience a plus

  • Individual must be self-motivated and work effectively in a matrix management structure, and demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, and results orientation to inspire trusted advisor relationships.

  • Client-service orientation, with the ability to balance and manage the evolving plans and needs of the organization, within and across constituent business segments is needed. Prior experience working with talent management software (such as viDesktop) is desirable.

The Manager of Training & Development will be based in Los Angeles or Century City and will have primary responsibility for supporting the professional development of lawyers in Sidley's southern California offices and providing additional support, as needed, for lawyers in the firm's northern California offices. Drawing on superior relationship-building skills, the Manager will conduct ongoing formal and informal outreach to individual lawyers; leaders at the practice, office, and committee level; and other key stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and maintain a practice of continuous needs assessment on matters of professional development. The Manager will collaborate broadly within and beyond the Lawyer Training & Professional Development team to create and implement local, regional, and firmwide programs and initiatives to advance our lawyers' development, engagement, and satisfaction; meet our clients' needs; and ensure the satisfaction of relevant continuing legal education and other requirements. The Manager will collaborate with the firm's broader Lawyer Training & Professional Development team, report to a Chicago-based Director of Training & Development and will supervise, develop, and mentor a Los Angeles-based Training & Development Coordinator. Duties and Responsibilities Lawyer Orientation, Integration, and Training * Assist in local and regional implementation of the firmwide strategic direction for attorney professional development. * Develop and deliver regional and firmwide training offerings that meet professional, business, and client-service goals. Propose, design, introduce, and support new initiatives as needed. * Collaborate with the Director and appropriate firm committees to deliver and continually enhance attorney orientation programs and lateral attorney integration initiatives, coordinate and implement summer associate training, respond to training and development needs identified in semi-annual associate appraisals, and otherwise further attorney training and development. * Track and evaluate the quality and quantity of attorney training opportunities, including collecting relevant data and producing related reports. * Produce professional development resources and craft professional development communications as needed. CLE Compliance * Share responsibility for tracking lawyers' California CLE compliance. * Communicate with California-admitted lawyers regarding their compliance status; work with the Director and Office of General Counsel to help ensure 100% compliance for California-admitted lawyers firmwide. Career Development and Mentoring * Promote a work environment that helps lawyers reach their highest potential. * Counsel lawyers on career-development matters as needed. * Help support firm mentoring programs, including implementing training and other resources for mentors and mentees.
