Job Description Summary:

The Train Service Manager is responsible for all rail freight throughout the entire rail process. This includes in gate at ramps, prompt assignment and departure of J.B. Hunt equipment on railroads, timely movement en route, prompt de-ramping at the destination terminal, management of equipment until out gate, as well as rail billing issues. This position will also act as liaison between J.B. Hunt and railroad personnel.

The successful candidate for this role will:

  • Manage all intermodal shipments moving on trains, ensuring that units depart origins and are available at destinations per railroad provided goals.

  • Communicate with internal and external customers, as well as railroad personnel to obtain and/or provide all necessary information regarding loads moving within the intermodal network.

  • Ensure all loads have good billing and are cleared to move on the rail. Exceptions can include EDI issues, Hazmat issues, or changes to the waybill to fit the needs of either J.B. Hunt or the railroads.

  • Manage the planned movement of all units at the rail ramps and all units under rail dispatch to ensure J.B. Hunt units achieve goals and can be delivered in a timely manner to the final customer. Communicate all ETA's to account representatives and dray operations so appointments are set correctly and loads can be planned for dray in a timely manner.

  • Request and assign train reservations for all loads travelling on certain railroads.

  • Generate and communicate Key Performance Indicators, in order to review with J.B. Hunt and rail personnel to identify potential areas of process improvement. Drive changes with both J.B. Hunt and the railroads where improvements can be made; quantifying the results of those changes.

  • Provide information and communicate with account representatives, RSM's JBI Delta Group and National Account Managers regarding dwelling equipment at railroad ramps. Maximize box turns on equipment to make available for revenue generation.

  • Build, nurture and maintain strong relationships with key rail personnel to achieve optimal communication for the betterment of the J.B. Hunt product.

  • Other duties as required

What does it take to be considered?

One of the following is required:

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or university
  • 2 years of related experience and/or training and one year of management experience
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

Other desired skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred.

  • Having a detail-oriented personality, with a passion for asking questions and resolving issues

  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and decision-making skills

  • Must possess strong computer skills, including typing and Microsoft Office programs
