A Day in the Life of a Train Dispatcher
Through the required use of innovative technology and data entry, Train Dispatchers control the safe and efficient movement of traffic across our 19,500 mile rail network.
During any shift, qualified dispatchers are responsible for the safe coordination of all rail movements, protection of train crews and support departments working on our rail network.
Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, strict rules compliance is a requirement.
Attention to detail, effective communication, accurate data entry, and prioritization are job requirements to provide the safe and efficient management of rail traffic while meeting the expectations and demands of our customers.

Projected Career Path
Dispatcher Assistant Manager Train Operations Manager of Train Operations
All newly hired dispatchers will be trained in the Atlanta area, possibly at multiple facilities and satellite offices across the network. Training will consist of instructor led classes, on the job training, with required testing at various stages.
After successful completion of the training program, dispatchers will be assigned to the Network Operations Center or temporary assignments in satellite offices where numerous qualified trainers will provide hands on training and instruction until requirements are met and proficiency approved by Norfolk Southern management.
Trainees who fail to satisfactorily complete the Training Program or their on-the-job training within a specified time limit will be dismissed.
Mandatory with associated membership dues into ATDA, (American Train Dispatchers Association).
During training, internal candidates will be paid at their previous crafts basic daily rate.
Upon successful completion of the training program and establishing seniority, candidates will enter into the 5 year progression rate as it relates to years of service and each year resulting in a 5% increase.
