Responsible for performing technical work associated with traffic maintenance such as sign repair/installation, pavement marking installations, and guard rail repair and installations.

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the work load.

  • Installs and maintains various traffic control devices including but not limited to signs, pavement marking, raised pavement markers, barricades and cones, and signal appurtenances as per Federal State and County Standards

  • Assists in the design, manufacture and assembly of traffic control signs and other street signs utilizing plotters and cutters and manual techniques, and guard rail safety devices.

  • Performs traffic data studies relating to traffic engineering, signalization and safe traffic control such as Timed Movement Counts, Accumulated daily totals, vehicle delay, and speed and curve slope speed studies.

  • Occasionally performs street light maintenance, guard rail maintenance, and assists with road closure devices and barricades as required.

  • Attends crew meetings, safety and project meetings and required training

  • May perform duties at any time of the day or night as required for emergency response.

  • Regular attendance.

Emergency Response

County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working in road or traffic maintenance.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record as defined by current insurance carrier.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment:

  • Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Certification

  • IMSA Traffic Signal/Technician Level I Certification

  • Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certification

  •  Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment:

  • certification in NIMS/Incident Command Courses IS100PWb, IS200, and IS700

  • ATSSA Flagger Certification.

Special Requirements

  • County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Required Competencies

  • Knowledge of various traffic control devices including but not limited to signs, pavement marking, raised pavement markers, barricades and cones, and signal appurtenances and the installation and placement of such devices.

  • Skilled in

  • Work Safety Zone design and applications for Traffic Control

  • Traffic sign manufacture and standards

  • use of power tools and equipment

Equipment Used

  • Hand tools, power augers, compressors, traffic data collection equipment, post drivers, and post pullers.

  • Filter respirators, gloves, safety vests, hard hats, safety goggles, ear plugs, heavy boots, and radio and communication equipment.

Environmental Conditions

  • Works outdoors in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, heavy rains and wind, and vibration.

  • Exposure to moving objects and traffic, and works in roadways.  

Physical Demands

  • Heavy and moderate lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses).

  • Walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, eye, hand and foot coordination.
