POSITION SUMMARY

The Traffic Technician performs technical duties in the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signs, and markings. Performs technical underground locating of traffic facilities as a tier 1 member of UNCC.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs fabrication, installation and maintenance of all traffic signs and sign posts.

  • Designs signs in house as needed using Gerber Graphics & Sign Cad software.

  • In house Fabrication of signs using Graphtec sign Plotter.

  • Assist managing shop inventory.

  • Fabricates and installs permanent and temporary signage for special events.

  • Performs lane marking layout, installation, removal, and painting of pavement markings such as stop bars, crosswalks, turn arrows, lane lines and artistic crosswalks.

  • Works with inlay / overlay plastic tape, pre-formed thermoplastic and waterborne paint.

  • Operates custom sign removal & installation truck.

  • Operates bucket truck.

  • Operates and maintains painting equipment.

  • Operates and maintains roadway grinding equipment.

  • Set up / maintain traffic control per MUTCD while working in city ROW

  • Performs maintenance and repairs to sidewalk decorative lighting

  • Installs, repairs and maintains traffic owned overhead luminaire lighting

  • Performs maintenance, installation and programing to all city owned school flasher beacons.

  • Performs maintenance and installation to all city owned pedestrian activated push button systems.

  • Performs maintenance, installation and programming to all city owned electronic speed limit signs.

  • Performs skilled work in installation and preventative and corrective maintenance on all traffic signal equipment including poles, mast arms, signal heads, underground and overhead electrical wire runs, pull boxes, controller cabinets, MMU's, controllers, UPS systems, pedestrian push buttons and fiber optic cable.

  • Install power meter and breaker panels feeding traffic assets.

  • Assist with annual certification of all malfunction monitor units.

  • Installs and maintain emergency vehicle detection.

  • Installs and maintains many types of vehicle detection systems

  • Installs and maintains traffic CCTV PTZ cameras (pan / tilt / zoom)

  • Setup, install and maintain all traffic network switches and devices.

  • Setup, install and maintain wireless spread spectrum network radios.

  • Monitors performance of traffic devices utilizing features of computerized master control software (Econolite Centracs) .

  • Keeps accurate records relating to traffic activities, problems and repairs relating to signs and markings, and traffic signals.

  • Performs underground infrastructure locates of traffic signal wiring, communications lines / fiber optic lines during and after business hours for Traffic.

  • Ability to work on call in annual scheduled rotation.

  • Keeps accurate records relating to traffic activities, problems and repairs relating to signs and markings, and traffic signals.

  • Assist with maintaining proper operation of school zone safety flashers

  • Assist with maintaining inventory of Signs & markings equipment and material

  • Responds to after hour emergencies when on-call. Repairs malfunctioning, knocked down, or inoperable traffic regulatory device.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education: High School Education or GED

Work Experience: 1 year of sign and marking experience, preferred

Any equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

Certifications and/or Licensures:

  • IMSA Work Zone Safety Certification (within 6 months of hire)
  • ATSSA TCT and or TCS or equivalent (or obtain within 12 months of employment)
  • IMSA Signs & Markings Technician level I (or obtain within 12month of employment)
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I (or obtain within 18 months of employment)
  • IMSA Roadway lighting Technician Level I (or obtain within 24 months of employment)

Required Driver's License: Valid Driver's License; Class B CDL (or obtain within 6 months of employment)

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Working knowledge of:

  • Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  • The safe operation of aerial devices

  • Fabrication, repair and installation of traffic control devices

  • The installation, maintenance and repairs of signal equipment

Skills and Abilities

Computer skills

  • Strong skills needed for record keeping, sign design software, software for testing and programming and installation of traffic signal equipment.

Communication

  • Basic customer service skills needed to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, City administrative staff, other City employees and representatives of major vendors, community organizations, institutions, other governmental agencies and the general public.

Analytical

  • Strong skills needed to evaluate field equipment for repair.

Mechanical

  • Strong skills needed to operate metal cutting-shear and acetylene torch.
  • Must be able to operate air compressor, jackhammer, small hand tools, airless paint equipment, and bucket truck.

Mathematical

  • Basic skills needed for crosswalk layout.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed primarily outdoors and occasionally in the shop. The employee is exposed to various weather conditions including wet, hot and cold conditions. Also exposed to various environmental conditions which may include excessive noise, dust, fumes, street traffic and materials used in traffic maintenance such as paint and chemicals.

HOURLY RATE

$25.21 - $37.82/hour
