Responsible for performing skilled technical work involving the maintenance, repair, installation, inspection and operation of traffic signal systems.The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize

peak work periods or otherwise to balance the work load.

  • Performs activities necessary to maintain, upgrade and install traffic signal installations in conformance with guidelines set forth by Federal, State and County standards.

  • Performs engineering studies related to signalization and safe traffic control such as turning movement counts, accumulated daily totals, vehicle delay, and speed and curve slope studies.

  • May perform traffic technician duties.

  • Occasionally performs street light maintenance as required and assists with road closure devices and barricades as required.

  • May perform duties at any time of the day or night as required for emergency response.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Regular attendance.

Emergency Response

County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Education

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).

Experience

Minimum of one (1) year experience in working with electrical and electronic devices or related field.

Skills

Ability to perform skilled technical work regarding the traffic signal systems.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations

  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License Class B and be able to be insurable by the County's insurance carrier.

  • Must possess a Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Certification and IMSA Traffic Signal/Technician Level I Certification within one (1) year of employment.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, certification in NIMS/Incident Command Courses IS100PWb, IS200, and IS700.

  • Ability to obtain ATSSA Flagger Certification (within 90 days of employment).

Required Competencies

  • Knowledge and ability to install traffic control devices per Federal, State and County guidelines.

  • Experience in the field of signal maintenance and operation.

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, techniques and trade materials of the electrical trade and associated equipment.

  • Ability to install, maintain and repair fiber optic cable and other communication cabling.

  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and electrical schematics for the purposes of installation, repair, and trouble shooting of electrical equipment.

  • Possess basic troubleshooting capabilities.

  • Ability to operate an aerial line lift and various other heavy pieces of equipment.

  • Ability to interact with co-workers, supervisors and the public in a professional and courteous manner.

Physical Demands

  • Heavy and moderate lifting (up to 75 lbs)
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Requires walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, eye, hand and foot coordination.

Environmental Conditions

Works outdoors in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, heavy rains and wind, and vibration. Exposure to electrical EMF and current. Exposure to moving objects and traffic, and works in roadways. Works from aerial platforms near electrical appurtenances. Frequently works in awkward positions to repair equipment.

Pay Grade: 4
