JOB SUMMARY
The Traffic Signal Technician is responsible for assembling, installing, repairing, and modifying traffic signs, maintaining signal timing and researching new sign requests. These duties are performed for public streets and City right of ways. Employee works independently in the field and is responsible for decision making requiring technical discretion, sound judgement, and familiarity with a variety of codes, ordinances, and construction methods. The employee develops work methods and sequences direct supervision.

KEY FUNCTIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Average skills; knowledge of commonly used work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to use specialized equipment
Safely operates tools and equipment in all types of weather, or conditions.The job may include morning, evening, weekend, holiday, split, or other work schedules.
Drives and operates hydraulic bucket trucks.
Install, repairs and modifies traffic signals, flashing lights, school zone flashing signs and other traffic equipment (pull electrical wire, run conduit, dig for foundations or run conduits).
Signal motorists in the direction of traffic.
Assist in the maintaining records of traffic signal timings and engineering drawings for all traffic signals.
Assist in determining whether new street sign or light requests are needed.
Manages the filing of completed repair reports (daily basis).
Ensures signs are properly mounted.
Assist in the setup of temporary traffic controls as necessary.
Keeps record of traffic reports and inventory of equipment.
Reports hazardous and dangerous conditions in and around the facility and streets, including incidents/accidents immediately.
Mow and maintain the traffic signal periphery.
Performs other related work as required (traffic control for city events or in case of disasters).
Education and Experience
High school graduation or GED plus one (1) year of experience.
Special Certifications and License
Valid Texas Driver's License.
I.M.S.A. Certification.

Average judgment; must recognize and resolve problems such as type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: don't have to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Direct contact may be infrequent, but may require considerable tact and courtesy when it does occur.
Physical Demands
Mostly moderate and fairly steady active physical exertion; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc, ability to exert up to 50lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.
Responsibility for Equipment and Property
Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; use of City vehicle.
Working Conditions
Constant exposure to hard work outdoors; daily exposure to physical danger or life-threatening situations; extreme stress.
Other Requirements
