Traffic Signal Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION

The incumbent, under the guidance of the Traffic Control Foreperson, maintains traffic signals and related equipment with the intention of providing the safest means possible for the motoring public to navigate throughout the city.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Other duties may be assigned. All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.

1.Repair traffic signals, school flashers and related equipment in a timely manner. Assist Electronics Technicians when needed.

2.Install new LED's in signals as necessary.

3.Repair and install vehicle detector loops.

4.Must live within a 30 minute drive to 3900 Kelley Hwy for quick response to emergency conditions.

5.Perform maintenance on equipment used in the duties of this position.

6.Make sure all necessary tools and parts are accounted for and readily available.

7.Keep inventory of all parts and equipment for signals.

8.Work with contractors during installation of new signals and related equipment.

9.Must have a reliable form of communication in order to respond to after-hours calls to work.



  1. Must participate in stand-by rotation.

  2. Must work on rotating shift that alternates between 7:00am-3:30pm and 10:30am


  • 7:00pm.

  1. Must have reliable transportation

  2. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED is required

  • Must have one year of experience working with hand tools.

  • Background in industrial maintenance is preferred.

  • Must be knowledgeable in all tools and equipment related to signal work.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The incumbent should possess knowledge and skill set that allows for them to be trained in electronic troubleshooting and repair as well as the use of tools and equipment in the electronic trade. Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Must acquire ATSSA Flagger Certification Training, IMSA Work Zone and Traffic Signal Technician Levels 1 within two years of accepting position. Course availability may create an extension of this time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms.

The incumbent must also climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Must be able to meet the weight limitations of the Aerial lift, in full gear, harness, any tools necessary and any parts

  • Max weight of 300 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision. Depth perception and ability to focus are also required.

The employee is occasionally required to life up to 100 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, is required to work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places. Working in a bucket truck up to 35' is quite common.

Periodically, working at a height of 65' is necessary. The incumbent is also at risk of electrical shock and vibration. Work areas are typically in close proximity of traffic and moving vehicles. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals as well as vibration

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
