General Description

The Traffic Engineering Division is looking for their next Traffic Signal Maintenance Worker to assist with the installation and on-going maintenance of traffic devices with a goal of efficient movement of people, goods and traffic safely and efficiently within the Madison metropolitan region. This is technical and semi-skilled electrical construction work assisting higher level staff in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, electronic, computer-based equipment associated with traffic signals, street lighting, fiber optic networking, and other City-maintained equipment and systems. Employees in this classification may perform less complex aspects of this work independently. Work may include performing traffic counts, repairing and maintaining related equipment, perform cable locating, and collecting and compiling data for computerized reports. Assignments are received by work order or general directive and are performed under general supervision.

Work Schedule:Monday - Friday,7:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair traffic signals, street lighting systems and related equipment.

  • Install, maintain, and repair equipment (e.g.: signal poles; signal heads & related traffic signal hardware; computer-based controllers; vehicle detectors; cameras; microwave and radar induction loops, pour concrete; set poles, arms, fixtures, ballasts, transformers, electrical vaults, photocells, control panels, fuses, etc.).

  • Respond to, diagnose, and repair malfunctioning traffic signals, street lights and circuits.

  • Respond to and make emergency repairs as assigned (accidents, contractor hits, etc.).

  • Perform routine and/or scheduled maintenance.

  • Locate and mark underground utilities (Digger's Hotline).

  • Assist higher-level electrical personnel as assigned.

Perform machine traffic counts.

  • Set down and pick up traffic counters.

  • Log and record counts.

  • Maintain and repair traffic counters and related equipment.

  • Retrieve count data through use of computers.

  • Review data for accuracy and complete required reports as assigned.

  • Field test new equipment and/or technology and provide feedback.

Assist with the installation and repair fiber optic systems.

  • Install and repair network wiring, fiber optic cable, and devices (LAN, Ethernet, etc.), video and/or camera devices, and related equipment.

  • Respond to and make emergency repairs as assigned (accidents, contractor hits, etc.).

  • Perform routine and/or scheduled maintenance.

  • Locate and mark underground utilities (Digger's Hotline)

  • Assist higher-level electrical personnel as assigned.

Perform miscellaneous worker activities.

  • Install and repair emergency alarm systems.

  • Complete work orders, including accurate records for new installations, repairs, maintenance, and related billing information.

  • Clean and maintain equipment.

  • Perform jobsite clean-up and landscaping.

  • Perform emergency work as needed including rotating standby duties/coordinating with outside agencies.

Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of general electrical or electronic repair and relevant maintenance, electrical construction and/or installation work; OR
  • Two (2) years of farm, automotive, or outdoor construction experience.

AND

  • Graduation from a trade or electronics school; OR
  • Completion of an electrical apprenticeship; OR
  • Military electronic experience.

If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:

Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:

  • Installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical equipment, systems, circuits and controls.

  • Computers and abilityto learn specialized software and technical systems applicable to the duties of the position.

  • Electrical occupational hazards and safety precautions for electrical work.

  • Diagnose problems and make repairs to traffic signal, street lighting, networking equipment, alarm systems, and associated equipment.

  • Comprehend and accurately perform work assignments from schematics, specifications, plans, written and/or verbal instructions.

  • Effectively use test equipment such as volt ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, fiber optic test and splicing equipment.

  • Work with software and databases to accurately record data, and prepare work orders, billings and reports.

  • Work independently or as part of a crew.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Driver learner permit with air brakes by the start of employment. Must obtain full Class A Commercial Driver's License within the probation/trial period. Failure to obtain this license within the probation/trial period will result in the employee not passing probation/trial period, absent extenuating circumstances.

  • Certification in CPR or the ability to obtain certification within the probation/trial period. Failure to obtain this certification within the probation/trial period will result in the employee not passing probation/trial period, absent extenuating circumstances.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds on occasion and objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, in high-traffic situations, and at various heights above the ground.

  • Must be able to get in and out of underground access structures, access uneven terrain, work in confined structure, and climb into/out of equipment.

  • Must be able to operate heavy construction equipment such as air hammers/compressors, cement saws, cable locating equipment, jackhammers, and hydraulic tools, and to pull cable in long conduit runs.

  • Must be able to operate a wide variety of aerial lift and line trucks, skid loaders, trenchers, and excavating equipment and work at various heights from aerial trucks and/or ladders.

  • Must be able to frequently walk, bend, sit, squat, climb, kneel, stoop and lift arms overhead to perform work for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to use color-coded wiring systems.
