Under limited supervision, the Utility Technician performs work that involves visual inspection of predefined construction areas and reading and interpretation of utility maps to determine the presence and type of underground utilities, while using special electronic equipment to actually detect and locate utilities. The Traffic Signal Utility Technician is responsible for the locating and marking all utilities for Traffic Engineering, and assisting in the operation & maintenance of traffic signals.
Under limited supervision, the Utility Locator performs work that involves visual inspection of predefined construction areas and reading and interpretation of utility maps to determine the presence and type of underground utilities, while using special electronic equipment to actually detect and locate utilities.
Use computer or other electronic devices to receive, document and close out excavation notices through the VA 811 system, both during normal hours and after hours, in accordance with established time requirements
Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel, regarding underground facilities
Perform light excavation with a shovel, to expose buried utilities when necessary
Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches related to all locates completed. Update & provide corrections to existing utility maps & drawings.
Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, aerial lift vehicles, trencher/backhoe equipment, digger derrick, etc.
Operate company vehicles in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance
Responds to emergency repair calls and complaints, on a 24-hour, 2-hour response basis; makes appropriate repairs in varying weather conditions.
Assist with installing and inspecting traffic signal equipment, including underground wiring control boxes, signal heads, and traffic counters; trains in use of equipment, as time and workload permits.
Works with and close to energized electrical circuits.
Maintains accurate records of daily manpower, equipment and materials usage using a computer.
Interacts with citizen, groups, and emergency services, assists with other departments (Police, Fire, etc.)
Works on a boat to repair bridge and navigation light system.
Performs other related duties as required.
Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational course work in electronics or electrical repair, 1 to 2 years of experience in the maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic control devices desirable; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment. IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II required within 24 months of employment. Training will be provided.
