General Information

Work Hours: Monday

  • Friday, 7 am-4 pm

This classification will set up, install, maintain, and repair traffic signal controller assemblies. Troubleshoot, install and repair traffic signal and signal system communications infrastructure. Read and interpret engineering plans and timing coordination documentation. Implement timing plans and timing parameters into traffic signal controllers and traffic signal timing management platform. Participate in emergency after hours on call rotations. Keep records and assist with operation and general maintenance of the Traffic Signal Systems and ATMS communications infrastructure.

Working Conditions

Indoor/outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment and continued employment with Manatee County Government is contingent upon passing pre-employment and random substance screenings. An applicant/employee who fails to pass a drug/alcohol screening, shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of three (3) years.

Job Description

Essential Functions

Install, repair, and maintain ATMS communications infrastructure.

Investigate signal operational and general timing complaints.

Processes paperwork and records and performs other administrative functions.

Inspect construction projects involving signal system infrastructure.

Install, maintain, and repair CCTV cameras and other ATMS infrastructure (fiber optic communications network, Bluetooth travel-time devices, microwave detection systems, DMS etc.)

Participate in special engineering projects that may include data collections or equipment evaluations.

Respond to general traffic signal malfunctions after hours.

Test repair and upgrade microprocessor and electronics-based signal equipment.

Preventive maintenance and system benchmarking.

Signal system log review and controller operational data audit.

Maintain permanent vehicle count stations assist with data management.

Assist with the construction of new or the modification of existing traffic signal systems.

Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate/equivalent.

Three (3) years relevant experience required.

Level II IMSA Traffic Signal Technician required.

Must possess and maintain valid Florida Commercial Driver's License Class B (w/air brake endorsement) or have permit prior to employment or obtain within one hundred twenty (120) days of hire.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

A.S. Electronics or Information Technology Military or vocational Electronics Training or IMSA Level III Traffic Signal Technician preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance requirements of traffic signal devices and components, microprocessors, and ATMS communications systems hardware.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including establishing safe work zones on roadways and intersections.

Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Ability to climb and descend equipment, ladders, steps, etc.; ability to work at heights of 20' utilizing lift truck.

Finger dexterity and hand coordination; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform other physical movements required for duties assigned.

Skill in the installation, repair and maintenance of signal devices and components.

Skill in diagnosing equipment malfunctions and taking appropriate action.

Skill in basic computer operations and pertinent software applications.
