Position Description
The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works is responsible for the management of Highways, Utilities, Waste, and the County's Capital Projects.
This posting will be used to fill a Full Time, Permanent, Safety Sensitive, Represented, Traffic Analyst I/II position. It is technical work assisting the engineering staff in the Bureau of Highways within Traffic Engineering.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves collecting, analyzing, and preparing reports and recommendations with respect to the flow and control of traffic, the analysis of construction plans for conformance with traffic control needs and requirements, and the on-site inspection of sign and signal installations and modifications. Work is performed independently within established policies and procedures, and is reviewed by a technical superior through conferences and reports.
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Collects, analyzes, and interprets various types of traffic flow and control data as a basis for developing recommendations or plans for the placement of traffic and pedestrian control devices.
Studies subdivision plans in all stages to determine if roadways conform to County requirements, recommends changes, and follows through to see if recommended changes are included in the final plans.
Conducts studies to determine need and location of school sidewalks and crossings, pavement markings, firehouse signs, and related matters.
Reviews site plans for building and access permits, conducts field investigations, and makes recommendations concerning traffic matters.
Conducts traffic volume counts and accident analysis at various locations; gathers data on road petitions and abandonments; prepares signing cost estimates.
Reviews zoning cases by conducting field investigations and review of plans to determine traffic impact.
Answers and investigates requests from citizens for the installation or modification of traffic control devices; determines sigh obstructions.
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the methods and techniques of traffic data collection.
Knowledge of general traffic rules, regulations, and ordinances.
Knowledge of the mechanical principles involved in the design and manufacture of street signs and traffic signals as those principles apply to the placement and utilization of such traffic control devices.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods used in pavement marking and traffic routing.
Ability to conduct difficult field and office traffic data collection surveys and to conduct data analysis.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to keep records and prepare accurate, concise reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Traffic Analyst I :Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in mathematics and drafting; one (1) or more years of experience in traffic data collection or related work; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
Traffic Analyst II : Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in mathematics and computers; two (2) or more years of experience in traffic data collection or analysis or related work; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
NOTE: The courses in drafting may be substituted with skilled work in traffic data collection or related work.
NOTE: Related work could include experience in highway/road operations.
NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol Testing.
NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.
