Position Summary: The Traditional Health Apprentice's main responsibility is to provide and support Traditional Indian Medicine (TIM) services at SIHB (including Thunderbird Treatment Center). This position will assist in the provision and promotion of cultural education to both Native and non-Native patients, service providers and the community at large.

Organizational Structure/Reporting Relationships: This position reports directly to the Traditional Health Program Director and is a member of the Traditional Medicine Team. This position has no direct reports.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the development of a culturally based service approach that focuses on an indigenous and trauma informed system of care

  • Work with clinical staff and participate in the coordinated care teams to provide traditional medicine services to relatives (patients)

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor educational program schedules which are designed for AI/AN people and SIHB staff to learn about Native traditions and cultural practices considering both tribal diversity and universal beliefs

  • Coordinate and monitor the effectiveness of culturally based programs, classes, and activities for relatives

  • Work with relatives and community members, volunteers, and SIHB staff to implement program activities

  • Purchase and monitor program supplies

  • Maintain file and data reporting systems which contribute to program analysis and evaluations to monitor program performance standards and requirements

  • Provide support to TIM Practitioners as needed

  • Actively participate in internal quality-improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality-improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal/state/local laws and regulations, and accreditation standards.

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Background Qualifications

Required:

  • High school degree or GED.

  • Advanced education preferred but not required (example: qualified TIM practitioner).

  • Knowledge of AI|AN traditional and cultural activities.

  • Knowledge of community resources for traditional health services.

  • Communication and networking skills; ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends as required.

  • Knowledge of computer applications necessary to fulfill job duties.

  • Experience participating in AI|AN cultural events and activities; strong background in AI|AN community work preferred.

  • Experience teaching AI|AN arts and crafts.

  • Experience providing TIM services preferred.

  • Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines.

  • At all times, demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients/relatives, and the community.

  • Experience working with the unique healthcare needs and social issues facing American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and the desire to promote the delivery of appropriate health services to this population.

  • Able to lift 30 pounds and to perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Valid Washington State driver's license, proof of car insurance and use of a personal vehicle.

Work Environment: Clinic hours are Monday-Friday during normal business hours, with evening hours and some Saturdays. Duties may involve long hours performing sedentary work at computer terminal.
