ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 182 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

Trades Helper duties may vary, and assignments could require use of skills in one or a variety of trades. Responsibilities may include general maintenance on City property, small engines, or playground equipment maintenance; cement finishing; traffic signal work; construction projects; preparation of surfaces for painting; graffiti removal; operating computers; ordering supplies. Incumbents may use high-pressure washers, airless paint sprayers, pneumatic tools, and power tools for general construction.

The trades helper position in Parks and Recreation will also monitor, document, and make minor adjustments of chemical balance of City swimming pools and maintain swimming pool deck equipment and hardware such as water slides, diving boards, pool ladders, and umbrellas.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of characteristics and uses of concrete and various cement mixtures.

  • Knowledge of setting wood and metal forms for sidewalks, curbs, gutter and any other concrete structure.

  • Knowledge of different hand tools to finish cement surfaces (e.g. towels, floats, straight edges, jointers, fresnos).

SALARY

Pay Range: $18.60 to $30.31 per hour.

Hiring Range: $18.60 to $22.61 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience assisting a skilled trades person or performing manual work which involved the use of an acquired skill.

  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Working irregular hours, second or third shift, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds will be required.

  • Requires working for prolonged periods standing in one location, and/or walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience with pool maintenance.

  • Experience maintaining baseball/softball infields.

  • Experience assisting a journeyman cement finisher in pouring concrete to construct curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, aprons, ramps, and other concrete structures to engineering specifications.

  • Experience preparing work-orders and building maintenance repair and janitorial experience.

  • Experience installing and maintaining signs, installing and maintaining crosswalks, stencils (i.e. bike markings, turn arrows), working with walk-behind airless striping machines, and traffic control experience.

  • Experience performing basic masonry work as a primary function of your job.

  • Experience performing painting work as a primary function of your job.

  • Experience using power tools.

  • Experience in basic mechanics.
