The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), a progressive organization at the forefront of intellectual property issues around the world, is seeking a high performing professional to join its Senior Executive Team as Trademark Group Director.


The Trademark Group Director provides oversight and direction to the Law Offices within Trademarks, including the coordination of the day-to-day activities of assigned staff. The Group Director position reports directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Trademarks.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Managing and coordinating trademark examining functions involving the services of a professional examining corps engaged in diversified legal and registration procedures;
Providing uniformity of practice throughout the Trademark Examining operation;
Preparing procedural instructions to implement and maintain statutory requirements, Trademark Rules of Practice, and policy decisions;
Establishing and maintaining standards of professional competence, ensuring Law Offices are adequately staffed with qualified examining attorneys and support personnel;
Analyzing and interpreting workload and production to achieve balance and maintain optimum pendency and backlog levels;
Formulating plans and programs to meet organizational objectives, allocating resources, establishing organizational structure and operating procedures and;
Ensuring examination functions are properly supported through coordination with and oversight of technical and administrative units.

The Professional Technical Qualifications (PTQs) for this position are:

Describe your demonstrated in-depth knowledge of legal issues associated with the preparation and/or prosecution of trademark applications, or the classification and examination of trademarks, or in comparable work in the trademark field.
Demonstrated high level experience with policy development, and program planning/evaluation.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and experience in law office management and administration.

This position requires that the selectee have a Law Degree from an accredited law school.

Probationary Period: You will be required to serve a one-year probationary period unless you previously completed the probationary period in the SES.
