The new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty Campus will open in the Spring of 2025. This 469,000 square foot facility will be home to UI Health Care's nationally recognized Orthopedics service line, offering comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible care across the outpatient, inpatient and surgical venues. These state-of-the-art clinical facilities will also include a full-service community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, retail pharmacy, and emergency department as well as an array of support services. Position Summary

Contribute to the success of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation by conducting clinical Orthopedic total joint research for Dr. Jake Elkins.

Position Responsibilities

  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by the principal investigator of the research project or other department research staff, working closely with orthopedic residents on their projects. Will need to coordinate escorting study patients from clinics to the OFIRL (Orthopedic Functional Imaging Research Laboratory).

  • Read and review articles as directed. As individual skills develop, analyze literature to develop hypothesis for discussion with other researchers or principal investigator.

  • Read and understand protocols. As individual skills develop, troubleshoot and analyze protocols; propose modifications to other researchers or principal investigator.

  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for research protocols. As individual skills develop, perform complex techniques as outlined in research protocols and test and evaluate current procedures.

  • Record and consolidate data as directed by Principal Investigator (PI). Track progress/success of research project.

  • May present results at research meetings.

  • Develop and monitor quality controls.

  • Collect, track, and perform data entry for reports. Prepare materials for reports. As skills develop, analyze data. Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publications.

  • Position may require some evenings and weekends during deadline season.

This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Education

Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering or other STEM field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in a science or public health field desired.

Experience Requirements

1-3 years of experience conducting research.

Experience working with statistics and large database datasets.

Proficient in MS Office computer software applications.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Attention to detail, ability to multi-task, organize priorities, and work independently to meet deadlines.

Desired Qualifications

Working knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations.

Working knowledge of human physiology/anatomy, orthopedics, or pharmacology.

Experience with coordinating randomized controlled trials and the monitoring/reporting associated with those studies.

Experience working with software applications related to research.

Familiarity with Patient Reported Outcome Measures and related research.

Ability to work well within a cohesive team.

Competencies (Not Required)

Knowledge of formal methodologies, tools and techniques for conducting research, studies and tests.

Knowledge of and the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate research findings compiled and documented by others and use this material to support empirical research.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize tools and techniques for producing well-written, meaningful and usable documentation of research findings.

Knowledge of practices, behaviors, applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing proper research conduct; ability to demonstrate ethical and compliant behavior in diverse situations.
