General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a premier provider of ordnance weapons and tactical systems to the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations, is seeking an Tool & Gage Make r#1 to join our Saco Operations team.

Major Position Responsibilities

Performs final machining, fitting, and assembly of workpieces and verifies conformance of workpiece to specifications using precision measuring tools such as surface plates, gage blocks, sine bars and plates, Cadillac and height gages, dial indicators, super micrometers, various types of inside, outside, and depth micrometers, optical comparators, toolmakers scopes, gages, etc.

Will set up and operate all assigned machinery and equipment to include capability of jig grinder to confirm specifications of tools, gages, fixtures, etc. to tolerances of thirty millionths (.000030) of an inch. Coordinate closely with Inspector Tool and Gage #1. Certify own work is to print, and may be required to verify the work of others for confirmation.

As necessary, will set up and operate grinding machines such as Surface and Universal, carbide, drill, and tool and cutter grinders. Sharpen cutting tools to specifications using blueprints, process sheets, and knowledge of abrasive and metal properties.

Perform final machining and assembly operations on close tolerance work requiring use of cylindrical or jib grinding equipment. May develop set-up and inspection techniques on jig grinder when no established method, procedure, or precedent exists. Develop gauging set-ups, surface plate inspection procedures, and measurement techniques necessary to confirm specifications within tolerances of the Tool Room environment.

May coordinate with tool design and metallurgist on design features and materials associated with tools, fixtures, gages, etc. Consult with engineers and gage laboratory inspectors on dimensional tolerances of manufactured or reworked tooling and gages. Solve problems relative to materials, tools, work-holding arrangements, machine settings, workpiece specifications, and fabrication methods.

  • No supervision required as to the mechanics of the job. Must be capable of performing all tasks and duties of Tool and Gage maker #2, and #3. • All employees are expected to be in compliance with government and corporate laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. • May be required to perform other duties as required by supervision and follow instructions as directed.

Basic Qualifications

Education, Training, and/or Certifications:Required:• High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Associates degree or technical college preferred.Experience:Required:• Employee must have basic computer skills, and may be required to enter and verify information into written forms or database(s) as appropriate.• Over four (4) years. Requires technical training equivalent to four (4) years high school plus apprenticeship or trade school background.Required:Knowledge:• Knowledgeable of the thermal expansion effects on close tolerance workpieces is required.• Requires knowledge of chemical composition and properties of metals and familiar with heat treat operations such as hardening, tempering, annealing, carbonizing, case hardening, normalizing, etc.• Must be thoroughly familiar with American national Standard Engineering Drawings and related practices associated with inspection of dimensions and tolerances (ANSI Y14.5). Interprets geometric characteristics and symbols.Skills:• Must be continually aware of specifications such as flatness, straightness, circularity, cylindricality, perpendicularity, angularity, parallelism, circular runout, total runout, concentricity, symmetry, etc. during all set-up and machining operations.• Must have sense of precision and a constant awareness of the influence of cleanliness, rigidity, trueness, and alignment of workpiece during all machining and inspection operations.

The amount of expended mental effort is exceedingly high.

Manufacturing Environment: Well-lighted, may be heated and air-conditioned. Working conditions are normal.
