VIEW JOBS 11/20/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-02-18T00:00 Transmit Receive (TXRX) Labs began offering classes focused on engineering and manufacturing technology to the community 15 years ago, offering workshops in woodworking, welding and machining as well as modern manufacturing modalities such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and other CNC machines. We have become a thriving makerspace with a robust education department, TXRX Edu. TXRX Edu includes 3 major initiatives: Maker to Inventor, Teach TXRX, and Maker Install. Maker to Inventor (M2I) is our four year, on-site after-school program that provides freshmen and sophomores foundational maker training and juniors and seniors three advanced training tracks to choose from: Engineer, Fabricator, and Entrepreneur. M2I allows TXRX to test new curriculum and add new skill training. Teach TXRX is a professional development program that helps teachers learn craft and technology based maker skills and supports implementation of maker-based learning in the classroom. Maker Install is our scalable K-12 education program that supports the addition of makerspaces and maker-based education in schools. The Maker Install program is not just the acquisition of equipment, it is the installation of a maker culture and consciousness. Each Maker Install begins with a year-long assessment of the strengths and challenges at each school, the resources and needs of the community, and the formation of partnerships with local stakeholders. Therefore, each Maker Install is customized to the school, its students, teachers, and neighborhood. Use of the makerspace is supported by co-development of curriculum with teachers by TXRX staff and VISTA members, maintenance of machines, and acquisition of materials. Seed funding supports the Maker Install for the first two years, but the goal is for the makerspace to be sustained by trained student and community volunteers, fundraising campaigns, and outside funding gained through outreach and events promoting the makerspace.
