Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Journeyman Machinist to join our team at our Bacchus, Magna facility.


Role description &

Responsibilities:

Operates various conventional and/or numerically controlled machining centers on semi-complex jobs, as well as operates related machine shop equipment and tools. Works from blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, verbal instructions, and/or engineering, tooling, or equipment information. Contributes to company and shop safety initiatives as well as initiatives to increase productivity and reduce costs. Works with limited guidance, in a team environment to meet customer and schedule needs.

Job Requirement

  • Able to setup, program and operate CNC lathes & milling machines, as well as setup and operate Manual lathes and milling machines. Including horizontal boring mills and VTL's

  • Must be able to set up and operate auxiliary machine shop equipment including precision Grinders, Radial arm drill presses, shapers, saws etc.

  • Must be proficient using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as dial calipers, micrometers, indicators, inspection gauges, deburring and finishing tools etc.

  • Able to accurately perform standard shop math computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling & feeds and speeds.

  • Able to accurately measure, mark and scribe dimension and reference points to layout stock for machining.

  • Able to interpret engineering blueprints, GD&T, sketches and engineering specifications and determine proper sequence of operations and methods of setup.

  • Observes all company policies and procedures, including safety rules, and maintains a clean and orderly work area.

  • Performs other related responsibilities, as requested.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School or equivalent

  • Able to provide document of a completed Machinist apprenticeship or Trade School Certification in Machining Technology

  • Five years or more machining experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Effectively and constructively communicates with all levels of personnel including customers, Engineers, leadership, coworkers and support team members.

  • Actively engages in PES (lean Manufacturing) improvement activities, process/procedure improvements, standard work instructions and the global improvement of the Machine Shop.

  • Be an advocate for our safety culture. Engage, promote and lead our teams in SIS (safety system) activities including hazard abatements, OP-E, Take Two, etc.

  • Demonstrates the initiative and ability to become knowledgeable and proficient in all area processes and supports all levels of hands-on tasks.

  • Positively influences coworkers and others to enhance the safety, quality, cost and scheduling of their team.

  • Assists leadership in achieving performance standards.

Propulsion Systems Division located in Magna, UT, is seeking a Manager to lead a Tooling Engineering Team. This position will have responsibility in leading 12 to 18 tooling engineers, tooling designers, and tooling planners and is ultimately responsible for meeting the technical solutions involving tooling for all programs. The qualified candidate must be able to lead an engineering group to effectively meet tool requirements for safety, quality, functionality, and manufacturability as well as the program requirements for cost and schedule. Organizational and multi-tasking skills are strongly needed. Screening Requirements: * BS Degree in Engineering. * 5 years of project management experience including responsibility for technical design, installation, budget and schedule. * Experience managing a team of engineers across disciplines. * Excellent problem solving skills and proven leadership of cross functional teams in resolving complex technical issues (product and processing equipment). * In depth knowledge and experience with both high hazard and inert processes is required. * Knowledge of configuration management. Preferred skills/experience: * Prior Engineering Management role preferred but not required. * 10 years' experience in tooling design preferred but not required. Experience with propellant/explosives highly desirable. * Sound financial understanding, including capital management and make/buy decision processes. Additional requirements: * Must have good communication and technical presentation skills. * Drive technical excellence by ensuring department meets technical standards. * Set role and performance expectations, and provide ongoing feedback and performance appraisals. * Develop subordinates. * Provide overall leadership and direction to the department (to include coaching team members, resolving conflict, reviewing performance, and initiating corrective actions if necessary)/ * Detailed understanding of process control through SPC, SQC or other process monitoring techniques. * Champion company values, especially safety. * Drive timely and clearly communicated decisions and recommendations. * Manage or provide input including cost estimates for technical proposals. * Oversee capital project budgets and schedule assigned to Tooling Engineering. * Manpower planning and forecasting. * Manage resources to support program schedules, balancing needs, priorities and cost. * Working knowledge of PFMEA and other advanced quality improvement tools. * Proven experience in Lean Manufacturing, and mentoring/coaching others in rapid problem solving and improvement. * Highly motivated self-starter.
