POSITION SUMMARY

Perform all processes required to design/build/repair/revise production tooling and cutting tools. Make tooling and fixtures to print specifications using hand tools, precision measuring tools and gages, lathes, grinders, and both manual and CNC milling machines. Provide back-up support to the Maintenance department as necessary. Purchase required supplies for the Tool Room. Serve as a resource for Production on tooling and cutting tools at all plants.

POSITION DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate CNC and manual milling machines, surface grinders, drill presses, radial arm drill press, lathe, band saws, and tool grinding equipment.

  • Read and interpret prints, die drawings and other supporting documentation.

  • Complete blocking, fixturing, and tooling as assigned.

  • Possess fabrication skills including the use of welders and torches.

  • Heat-treat tool steels.

  • Assist with troubleshooting punch dies and equipment and implement improvements as needed.

  • Research, define and design tooling and equipment to meet Production requirements. Serve as a consultant through the build process and authorize design changes as needed.

  • Purchase all required supplies for the Tool Room and serve as a back-up for all Purchasing functions in the Maintenance department.

  • Research butt mill cutter stacks, make up emergency butt mill cutter stacks and set up butt milling machines as needed.

  • Serve as a point of contact for tooling at all plants to include new and existing tooling, new extrusions and tooling required for production machining problems.

  • Knowledgeable and capable of CNC milling machine programming and operations.

  • Produce quality tooling and machinery within required tolerances that meet customer expectations, including jigs, fixtures, punch dies, machinery, and cutting tools.

  • Work with C.I. Engineers and production associates for continuous improvement of tooling and machinery during and after the building process to ensure tooling is user friendly.

  • Become familiar with the Tool Sharpener job duties and support that area as needed, including maintaining the inventory of saw sharpening supplies, perform basic machine maintenance on the sharpening equipment as well as Tool Room equipment, maintain communication with production areas to ensure sharpening needs are met for fluctuating production requirements.

  • Process improvement projects and Kaizen event support.

  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.

  • Undertake job responsibilities in a manner consistent with the Company's Core Values.

  • Adhere to established Policies, Critical Business Practices (CBPs), Standards, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Support Six Sigma/Lean and the continuous improvement process.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Graduate from a Machine Tool program with Journeyman certification

  • Machinist skills with 3-5 years experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Relevant machinery and equipment experience to include CNC machines, tow motor, crane, and man lift use. Knowledge of window systems, products, and processes.

  • Strong mechanical skills and abilities

  • Experience with "on the job" training methods, safety training, quality methods training and inventory methods.

  • Maintain a positive attitude of cooperation and communication with all associates.

  • Effective problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Maintain flexibility in the daily work schedule and open to new ideas.

  • Proven organizational skills.

  • Computer software proficiency in the following software: AutoCAD, Inventor, Microsoft Outlook, Intranet functions, and ERP software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Primary work location is in the Tool Room or Maintenance areas but may include any area of Operations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The work shift may vary depending on the needs of the area being worked in, including overtime and Saturday work.
