The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado System, is the major academic medical center in the Rocky Mountain region. The University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry has just welcomed their new Department Chair, C. Neill Epperson, MD and is in the process of growing the Department of Psychiatry with new programs and expanding existing programs.

Under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist, The TMS technician will operate transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) machines to provide TMS treatments to patients with major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder in the CU Medicine Faculty Practice TMS Program. The TMS technician will also follow research protocols to provide TMS for experimental indications such as PTSD, substance use disorders, and disorders of executive functioning. They will provide support and psychoeducation to patients receiving TMS for psychiatric conditions.

Examples of Work Performed (under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist):

  • Prepare patients for ascertainment of motor evoked potential

  • Operate and control settings of electrophysiologic recording device

  • Measure, calculate, and log recorded electrophysiologic information

  • Independently administer TMS according to clinical and research protocols

  • Ascertain motor evoked potential

  • Operate and control settings of electrophysiologic recording device

  • Measure, calculate, and log recorded electrophysiologic information

  • Correctly position the TMS coil

  • Monitor for adverse effects and notify the psychiatrist

  • Assist in the management of adverse effects including seizures

  • Administer validated rating scales to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment

  • Provide psychoeducation curriculum to patients

  • Actively participate in marketing and patient recruitment.

  • Obtain insurance authorization

  • Assist psychiatrist by gathering and reviewing medical records to aid in appropriate patient selection

  • Provide any in-house required trainings on TMS machines

  • Maintain and improve skills by participation in in-services and trainings

  • Follow infection control guidelines, including universal precautions

  • Participate in scheduled individual supervision, health team meetings, interdisciplinary work groups, staff meetings, and other required meetings.

  • Complete all required clinical and administrative documentation to accepted standards of practice, accurately, legibly, and by established timelines on electronic health record (EHR) system and paper as needed.

  • Perform other delegated duties under the direction of the psychiatrist

  • Expected to demonstrate high quality customer service focus, excellent communication and professionalism with clinic users, physicians, co-workers, and representatives from outside agencies and to enhance community relationships.

  • Ability to effectively utilize computer and electronic medical record.

  • Proficient mathematical skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and, ideally Excel and PowerPoint

Minimum Education and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

  • Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

  • Medical Assistant Certificate

  • Additional experience and certifications will increase applicants' competitiveness. (e.g. bachelor degree in psychology or related major, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Certificate, Professional Research Assistant experience)

Substitution: College or university course work appropriate to the work assignment, may substitute on a year for year basis for the experience but not for the Medical Assistant Certificate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a TMS technician

  • Experience obtaining insurance authorization

  • Previous work in a mental healthcare environment

  • Prior Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience.
