DEQ has an open opportunity for a Title VI & Environmental Justice Coordinator.

  •  It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

This position serves as a primary point of contact for the Title VI and Environmental Justice program. The coordinator will develop and review program materials, analyze and map data, and conduct outreach in support of the program goals. The position assists DEQ staff with analytical and advisory work, including data reviews and drafting environmental justice reports required to monitor and facilitate the Agency's compliance with Title VI and the department's Environmental Justice and public engagement processes. Position will interact with stakeholders including state and federal agency staff, regulated community, community organizations and the general public. This position reports to the DEQ Deputy Secretary for Public Affairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and supports agency non-discrimination programs and monitors compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

  • Develops Environmental Justice reports analyzing sociodemographic information for site specific and statewide activities.

  • Assists with maintaining and updating the DEQ Community Mapping System GIS interface and datasets.

  • Recommends and conducts appropriate community outreach.

  • Conducts staff training and support related to Environmental Justice.

The Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs:

The Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs is responsible for supporting the department's initiatives and objectives through communications, outreach, and dissemination of information to the public in a professional manner. The office coordinates the department's communications, public information and outreach efforts through interaction with residents and the news media, publication production, special events and public information programs and initiatives, and serves in an advisory position to the Secretary and senior management regarding a broad array of internal and external communications issues.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in drafting reports and/or written analyses of demographic, geospatial, and/or program data.

  • Demonstrated experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping programs.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting and giving presentations for public or stakeholder outreach.
