Customer service position responsible for responding to customer requests and concerns, as well as assisting in the receipt/sorting of donations and sales of thrift store goods. Also, directs thrift store volunteers as necessary. This is a regular part time position with a work week expectation of 28 hours.


  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates.

    Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind. Provides independent, courteous problem-solving services to thrift store customers in a timely, accurate and effective manner. Forwards concerns/suggestions/complaints to the appropriate individual.

    Operates cash register, accurately recording each sale and preparing daily sales reports. Provides receipts for donations and sorts as necessary. Directs volunteers as they complete tasks throughout the thrift store. All other duties as assigned by thrift store management.


The position requires a High school diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED) or equivalent education and experience. Customer service and/or cashiering experience preferred.

Amiable, helpful, courteous, and respectful demeanor, with ability to work well with fellow employees and volunteers, take supervision from thrift store manager, and demonstrate concern for thrift store customers. The qualified candidate must be able to lift heavy objects; be able to pass the background check and drivers' qualification. It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications * Working knowledge of special skills ordinarily performed by groundskeepers, carpenters, painters, janitors, and mechanics sufficient to make minor repairs. * Use hand tools and handle fairly light materials manually. * State of Minnesota Boilers License. Physical Requirements * Physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions (e.g. lifting, standing, sitting, pulling). Physical abilities include - bending, stooping, and reaching above shoulder level, crouching, pushing and pulling on a regular basis. * Twisting and squatting are necessary on an occasional basis. * Ability to work outside in extreme heat or below freezing weather. * Work above the ground level such as on ladders and scaffolding. * Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
