FLSA: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: Teacher Assistant(s), if applicable

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an approved teacher education program in subject area

  • North Carolina Professional Educator's License in area of assignment.

NATURE OF WORK: The Teacher's job is to assure that all students learn the basic and essential skills at each grade level.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when the student is participating in an inclusive activity.

  • Ability to motivate students and to maintain order and discipline in a classroom.

  • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.

  • Ability to perform general clerical duties, including operating common office machines and maintaining basic files and records.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

  • Ability to use a wide variety of technology in the classroom.

  • Ability to create and follow rigorous lesson plans that correlate with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

  • Instructional Process

  • Plans and implements a program of instruction that adheres to the district's philosophy, goals, and objectives as outlined in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

  • Makes purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.

  • Plans and implements a program of study designed to meet the individual needs of students.

  • Encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.

  • Provides progress and other reports as required.

  • Prepares a Substitute Teacher Folder containing appropriate information as required by the Principal.

  • Plans and prescribes purposeful assignments for teacher assistants, tutors, and volunteers as needed.

  • Recognizes learning problems and makes referrals as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates a strong grasp of the subject matter.

  • Uses effective oral and written expression.

  • Curriculum Development

  • Keeps up-to-date in knowledge of subject matter and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge with others for continual improvement of the school's curriculum.

  • Assists in the ongoing curriculum revision process, including the revision of written courses of study.

  • Becomes acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.

  • Classroom Management

  • Develops, in accordance with district and school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate classroom management techniques, and applies them consistently.

  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Shares responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in all areas of the school.

  • Provides for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.

  • Public Relations

  • Upholds and enforces Board of Education policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public.

  • Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and the appropriate use of conference and planning time.

  • Strives to communicate the positive aspects of the MCS school program to the public in word and deed.

  • Works cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational program for their children.

  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.

  • Professional Growth

  • Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher education.

  • Maintains membership in appropriate professional organizations.

  • Cooperates with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs at the school or district level.

  • Attends all staff, department, and committee meetings, as required.

  • Student Evaluation

  • Evaluates accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods such as teacher-made tests, samples of student work, mastery skills check lists, criterion-referenced tests, and norm-referenced tests.

  • Makes appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required by the Principal.

  • Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with the Code of Ethics for North Carolina Educators, and state and federal laws.

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Teacher job classification within Martin County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered light physical work and requires the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally to lift objects and a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  • Regularly requires the ability to sit and talk or hear.

  • Frequently requires the ability to walk and use fingers to operate tools or controls.

  • Occasionally requires the ability to stand and reach with hands and arms.

  • Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions.

  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, articles, proposals, manuals, legislation, graphs, charts, etc.

  • Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, charts, graphs, statistical analysis, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.

  • Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.

  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently through a variety of technical and professional languages, including psychometric, statistical, and educational research terminology.
