The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world. SIO operates three major seagoing research vessels, which conduct physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of oceans worldwide. Scripps oceanographic research vessels make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world. Scripps ships have state-of-the-art research instruments to study marine life, the oceans, the seafloor, and the atmosphere. Cruises vary from local trips to expeditions as long as six years. Scripps research ships, available to scientists around the world, have steamed more than six million nautical miles in support of science and the academic community.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, the Third Assistant Engineer (3rd AE) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all main and auxiliary engine room machinery and plant equipment while on duty and is expected to complete any routine service, minor repair work as necessary during the watch. The 3rd AE provides work direction for Oilers, Wipers, and unlicensed day workers in the maintenance, repair and proper operation of machinery and engine equipment in engineering spaces. Traditionally they stand two 4-hour underway watches daily and security watches in port. Third Assistant Engineers maintain logs on all operating machinery while on watch. On SIO ships they are generally responsible for the marine sanitation device, associated sewage systems, oily water separator, bilge/oily waste pumps, and valves and air compressors. They assist in loading stores, and parts, and bunkering the ship, and they perform other duties as defined by a ship's senior officer during emergency situations. Provides work direction for other Operational and Technical Marine Engineering staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and work experience.

  • Proficiency in the proper operation and maintenance of diesel engines for propulsion and auxiliary power and related shipboard equipment and systems.

  • Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of ancillary engine room equipment and systems (including water makers, sewage treatment plant, fuel / oil transfer and purification system, ballast system, HVAC, electrical, etc.)

  • Demonstrated seamanship skills (knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance and care, preparation / preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, winches, etc.)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of university, state, federal and international maritime practices for ship operation and maintenance.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations relevant to maritime operations.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse groups, and to provide work direction to junior crew.

  • Demonstrated computer skills with good working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and use technical drawings and documentation.

  • Demonstrated basic math skills.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time (8-12 weeks).

  • U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer license for related vessel.

  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

  • Background check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,786 - $124,997 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $41.09 - $59.86

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
