Required

  • Working toward a B.S. in geology with interest in petrography, the creation of rock thin sections,

and XRF analysis and sample preparation.

  • Experience in identification of rocks and minerals in both hand sample and thin section.

  • Must have taken and passed Optical Mineralogy and Petrology lecture and lab classes.

  • No related work experience required.

  • Must enjoy some physical labor and be organized.

  • Interested in petrology, geochemistry, hard-rock mining, petrographic research, or a related field.

  • Some training and experience in WSB's rock room and/or analytical lab.

  • Experience running mechanical equipment like saws.

  • Independent worker.

Staffing Reason Institutional Primary Responsibilities

Purpose of Job: Conducts petrographic analysis on the G. David Mattison collection of paired hand samples and thin sections to describe and curate the collection for use in advanced geology classes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Use petrography skills to analyze and prepare a single-page descriptive report for individual thin sections in the G. David Mattison collection.

Acquire images through the optical microscope of each thin section, including any pertinent area on the thin section, and store images in a digital database.

Other duties as assigned.

Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times.

Supervision: Direct supervision from Dr. Jesse Kelsch for day to day instruction. Dr. Kelsch will also act as the Faculty Mentor within the STEM Internship Program.

STEM Internship Program:

This position is part of the Title III STEM Lobotrack to Success (LTS) Supplemental Instructor Program. Along with the normal job duties, the student will learn from the faculty supervisor about the STEM workforce, different career pathways, research, and more. Students will gain knowledge, experience, and professional internship program (resume building, interview practices, etc.) For more questions regarding the Supplemental Instructor Program, reach out to Maya Vaughn (maya.vaughn@sulross.edu).
