The Thin Film Technician provides technical support, under direct supervision, in all aspects of the Thin Film Coating process including, but not limited to thin film testing and quality control. Performs support functions with minor decision authority to keep the manufacturing running effectively and bringing bigger problems to management's attention.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working on daily production of thin film deposition on assigned projects; ensures product design meets customer specifications and technical requirements as supplied by department supervisor and/or job traveler

  • Execute basic substrate handling and cleaning

  • Perform basic spectral testing and interferometric tests to support production requirements

  • Support manufacturing operations to ensure products are delivered on time

  • Report any discrepancies in processes/procedures to the appropriate lead personnel

  • Track inventory of parts and supplies; flag low inventory

  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of coating machines, including cleaning, acid stripping, assembly, disassembly, and bead blasting of chamber parts

  • Perform intermediate troubleshooting of equipment, including leak detection, pump down time testing, ion gauge monitoring on chambers

  • Maintain process documentation, test procedures and inspection reports as prescribed by engineering and lead operations personnel as required

  • Categorize and log witness samples from each production and test run; logs precious metal usage

  • Supports engineering activities for development and implementation of new thin film coatings and manufacturing processes

Education & Experience

  • 4+ years of thin films or related manufacturing experience including basic knowledge of operational procedures and tools OR relevant degree/certification

Skills

  • Ability to read instructions and maintain concise written records are required

  • Ability to inspect incoming material/final product to customer specifications

  • Capable of operating advanced manufacturing equipment to achieve specified results

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Working Conditions

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts

  • Work in areas with fumes, or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals

Physical Requirements

  • Standing.: Particularly for sustained periods of time. (up to 2 hrs)

  • Working with Hand / Fingers:. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles. (up to 40lbs)

  • Visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision: Requiring close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corporate EHS standards.

Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including smocks and other clean room apparel for prolonged periods.

May be required to wear a respirator during certain tasks.
