Description
Under the direct supervision of licensed or certified therapy staff and within allowable scope of practice, the Therapy Technician is responsible for administering patient treatment and/or indirect patient service within specified areas in the hospital and clinics or California Children's Services: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Psychology and Therapeutic Recreation. The Therapy Technician is also responsible for tasks and activities that support the environment of patient care.

Typical Tasks
Provide assigned direct patient care in conformance with care plans established by the primary therapist (e.g., exercise, mobility, activities of daily living, communication activities, education, range of motion, behavior management);
Provide indirect care and support, including transportation, preparation, and set up of patients and equipment;
Assist therapy staff with procedures;
Participate and assist licensed or certified therapy staff with group treatment and community outings;
Fabricate and modify assistive devices and special equipment;
Observe and report patient condition and status to primary therapist;
Collect data in accordance with specified guidelines and provide patient information to therapist that contributes to the plan of care;
Document care provided;
Assist with application, removal, and replacement of protective, comfort and therapeutic devices per established care plans;
May order Durable Medical Equipment according to therapist instructions;
Perform minor checking and repair to equipment and other devices;
Assist in maintenance of treatment areas by returning equipment, taking inventory, cleaning treatment equipment and organizing files and cabinets;
Participate in meetings and in services as requested by supervisor;
Provide a safe environment for patients, families, visitors, self, and staff (e.g., universal precautions and body mechanics);
Maintain records and perform related duties as required;
Assist with data gathering for Quality Improvement;
Orient volunteers according to guidelines;
May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
Other related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Sufficient training, education and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed below.
Training and Experience Note: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Typically, the applicant will have one year of experience as a Therapy Aide, Nurse's Aide, or Hospital Volunteer when assignment offers an opportunity to work around patients, or one year of coursework relevant to therapy and hospital work.
Knowledge of:
Relevant medical terminology;
Basic communication skills;
Patient observation skills;
Record keeping practices.

Work with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team in a courteous, effective and cooperative manner;
Communicate effectively and responsibly, verbally and in writing;

Recognize need for and seek advice from supervising therapy staff when needed;
Instruct and assist patients effectively;
Perform routine clerical work;
Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patients, and others;
Stand and walk for long periods;
Assist, support, lift and transfer patients;
Reach, grasp, and manipulate a variety of objects;
Carry equipment/supplies and operate power tools.
