Theatre Technical Director

Reporting to the Director of Athletics & Co-Curricular Program, the Theater Technical Director collaborates with the Theater Director, performing arts faculty, and students, to design, plan and deliver sets, props, sound, lighting and special effects.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Design, plan, and execute all technical components of productions, including sets, sound, lighting, A/V, props and special effects, in collaboration with the Theater Director and in accordance with professional design standards and a shared creative vision;

• Construct custom scenery and furniture, including painting, wallpapering, flooring installation, electrical work, plumbing, upholstery, welding, soldering, sewing, and ironing;

• Manage the Theater Program's set construction and storage facilities, including the scene shop and backstage area. Ensure that equipment is stored properly and in an organized fashion, in good repair and the areas are safe and utilized according to OSHA regulations and standards;

• Maintain accurate set inventory and effectively manage the procurement of all building materials and tools;

• Provide close supervision of the students in the theater technical crew co-curricular, and instruct them in safe set construction techniques, and sound and lighting design.

• Train students to use all props, including theatrical weapons, in a safe, OSHA compliant, and responsible manner. Transport students to off-campus venues.

• Supervise the post-performance strike of all sets. Instruct students in appropriate disposal and recycling of materials, and thorough cleaning and laundering, to restore the theater facilities and all props and costumes to their pre-performance state;

• Ensure the safe use of all stage pyrotechnics, include haze, fog, and other special effects;

• Ensure that all equipment in the Black Box Theater is maintained and operational. Perform regular maintenance and cleaning, and recommend contract servicing of all equipment and technical spaces;

• Collaborate with the ITS Production Services team to fulfill sound and lighting needs for other Academy and Visual and Performing Arts events as needed

• Accompany students to domestic and international theater performances. Serve as trip chaperone and ensure the proper shipment of all required sets and props;

Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

• Associates Degree and/or all training, certifications, and licenses required to perform the job according to federal, state and local regulations and safety protocols;

• 3-5 years' experience in theater technical operations, including responsibility for scenery construction and theatrical lighting is required, experience in an educational institution is preferred;

• Knowledge and experience with current theatrical systems, and up-to-date theater safety policies, procedures and guidelines;

• In-depth knowledge and demonstrated experience with OSHA regulations relative to constructions equipment, power tools, etc.

• Strong carpentry skills;

• First Aid/CPR Certification required

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evening and/or weekend hours;

• Strong initiative and the ability to be self-directed, resourceful and creative;

• Demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously;

• Strong written and oral communication skills;

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;

• Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and familiarity with AutoCAD software preferred

• Willingness and ability to learn additional technologies as needed;

• Skilled with and interest in the promotion of cooperation and teamwork with colleagues;

Working Conditions

The worker is mainly in a theater facility, and is typically not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The worker spends some time working in the scenery shop and at the Academy's off-site storage facility, which includes exposure to sharp tools, dust, saw dust, and paint fumes. Worker is occasionally subject to noise.
