Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, an Autopsy Coordinator is a valuable member of our team, who works closely with the Director of the Autopsy Service and Decedents Affairs Office Coordinator to provide diening service, and interact with a wide range of medical center staff, including laboratory staff, physicians, nursing staff, Patient Access, Public Safety, Hospital Transport, Environmental Health & Safety, Infection control, Facilities, and community Funeral Directors to ensure smooth operations of all aspects of the autopsy service. Qualified candidates will maintain a general knowledge of safe practices and demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties of an Autopsy Coordinator will include the following but are not limited to:

Autopsy:

  • Responsible for the operational aspects of an autopsy, from coordinating with the Pathology Attending/residents, setting up for the autopsy, assisting the Pathologist/resident during the dissection, sewing up the body post mortem, cleaning up the autopsy room, to returning body to morgue.

  • Sets up autopsy room for Neuropathologist to examine/gross the brains and cleans up afterwards.

  • Sanitize the autopsy room/body utilizing Stera Mist.

  • Works with Decedents Affairs Office Coordinator, Patient Access staff, and community funeral directors for coordination of autopsies and release of bodies according to all Hospital policies and external regulations. Work with DAO to resolve issues and/or brings concerns to the attention of the Associate Technical Director of AP.

  • Works with DAO and Director of the Autopsy Service to coordinate scheduling of autopsy conferences with Attending Pathology/residents. Ensure the Clinical Staff of the Patient's service is invited. Prepares specimens and autopsy room for pathology conferences and cleans up afterwards.

Daily Tasks:

  • Check morgue 2x daily for cleanliness and available space, free up gurneys by moving bodies to the shelves when necessary. Notify Patient transport supervisor if gurneys require cleaning/repair.

  • Responsible for all equipment preventative maintenance and completing maintenance logs.

  • Responsible for troubleshooting equipment, repairs, and annual service.

  • Place work order and repair requests when necessary.

  • Bring any equipment issues forward to the Associate Technical Director of AP.

  • Primary contact for Rees monitors in the autopsy area, responsible for addressing all out of limit alarms for autopsy devices.

  • Generate and review monthly Rees reports, document reasons or corrective actions for all out of limit values and forward to Associate Technical Director of AP for signature.

Clerical:

  • Place all supply & equipment orders for the autopsy area utilizing Lawson system.

  • Responsible for creating and updating autopsy policies in Policy manager.

  • Run weekly pending logs for autopsy cases. Send email reminders to Pathologists on cases pending over 50 days (cc the Director of the Autopsy Service).

  • Prepare monthly autopsy statistical report for Lab Administration.

  • Work with Associate Technical Director of AP and Lab Quality Manager to review and update annual autopsy risk assessment and chemical log.

  • Provide backup for registrations/entering orders in SMS/PowerChart.

  • Prepare Autopsy reports for the quarterly APQA.

  • Prepare APQA monitors for correlation of autopsy reports completed in the quarter and send to the Attending Pathologist on the case.

  • Run Autopsy preliminary TAT report

  • Run Autopsy TAT report

  • Report quarterly autopsy Dashboard data

  • Run any other autopsy related data reports that may be requested.

Placentas:

  • Check labeling of containers with requisitions, work with Labor & Delivery on any issues.

  • Accessioning placentas utilizing Laboratory Information system (CoPath), print tissue cassettes, set up grossing table, assist grossing, clean up.

  • Responsible for storage, report release, and disposal of grossed and "storage only" placentas.

Medical Waste:

  • Organizes/ stores autopsy / placenta / wet tissue specimens until ready for disposal.

  • Handles medical waste disposal of autopsy/placenta specimens according to established policies & procedures. Works with Housekeeping and Environmental Health & Safety to ensure appropriate disposal.

Misc:

  • Provide backup for microscope slide/tissue block filing and retrieval.

  • Works with the Decendents Affairs Coordinator in arranging for viewing in the bereavement room when requested by the family.

  • Prepares the body for viewing, bring to the viewing room and returns the body to the morgue after the family leaves.

  • Training of new staff or staff responsible for coverage.

  • Must understand and comply with all JC / CAP / NYSDOH / PESH / EH&S, Stony Brook Medicine, Dept. of Pathology and compliance regulations and standards.

  • Serve as a professional role model in representing the Department of Laboratories.

Emergency Management Plan:

  • Assume role of back up Morgue Supervisor, when the DAO is unavailable as required under the SBM Emergency Management Plan.

  • Assist the DAO in coordinating training of temporary morgue staff.

  • Help to establish protocols and procedures for the hospital morgue & mobile morgue unit when Emergency Management Plan has been activated by the Hospital.

  • Coordinate with Patient access to provide "Daily Morgue Census" to Hospital Leadership.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biological Science or Mortuary Science or ,in lieu of a degree, at least 2 years of experience as a Diener/Autopsy Aide in a Hospital setting and/or Medical Examiner's Office

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to shift bodies/objects and to use a respirator

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science, or Mortuary Science
  • 2 or more years of clinical experience (Diener, Autopsy Aide, or Funeral Director)
  • Experience with Stryker Bone Saw, suturing, sharps handling, and/or basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $43,204-$50,551.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all UUP positions have an additional $3,087 for location,
