Specific Job Responsibilities
Seeking an Electrical or Computer Engineer to join a team that is designing and developing advanced components, subsystems, and systems for national defense programs. This engineering team employs state-of-the-art technologies, including sophisticated software tools for design, analysis, modeling, and simulation.
Responsibilities for electrical engineers range from conceptual design, detailed hardware design (a combination of analog, digital, embedded firmware, schematic capture, board layout), detailed software design (instrument drivers, system integration, database design/interface, report generation, related software quality assurance documentation), analysis, overseeing fabrication of hardware, defining and executing qualification/testing plans, field support, as well as project management. Successful candidates will work in a team environment with opportunities to acquire increasing levels of responsibility. Designs and develops software applications used to automate complex instrumentation systems, perform calculations on and manipulate very large data sets, interface with databases, create user friendly operator interfaces, and consolidate results into legible reports. Opportunities also available to contribute to design and improvements to the database architecture.
Applies integrated technical judgment--which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses--to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to CNS Pantex missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles.
Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.
Designs and develops new electronic and electromechanical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Researches and develops the theory and application of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation, computational intelligence, and other electronic components for use in test equipment. Researches and develops solid-state integrated circuits, including computers, communications, signal processing, or optoelectronics.
Assesses capabilities of existing components, equipment, systems, and networks. Utilizes industry standard concepts for electrical grounding/shielding/bonding concepts to all hardware designs.
Specific Knowledge and Skills
Experience in nuclear explosive operations or a related technical field is preferred.
Ability to evaluate and provide feedback on new and proposed revisions to technical operating procedures, design drawings, design requirements, and facility systems, structures, and components.
Ability to perform technical evaluations of processes and provide well-written, technical feedback.
Ability to make informed decisions and support those decisions to your peers and senior management.
Understanding and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
Education & Relevant Experience
BS in engineering/science discipline and/or holds a Texas Professional Engineering License (PE): Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.
MS in engineering/science discipline: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
PhD in engineering/science discipline: Minimum 2 years relevant experience.
The applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., bachelors in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative).
The job related and nuclear experience requirements noted above are not a prerequisite for employment. These experience requirements can be satisfied based on experience obtained following employment. In the interim, until experience requirements are met, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2)
The minimum education and experience for the lowest career level in the job posting range are listed under Specific Job Knowledge & Training Required. Successful candidates hired into a higher career level than the minimum in the range must meet the requirements listed in the job leveling charts for the career level into which they are being hired.
If a range of Career Levels is posted, i.e., Senior Associate to Senior Specialist, internal applicants already in one of the Career Levels would come across at their current Career Level. Internal applicants currently in a lower level Career Level would move to the lowest posted Career Level, and internal applicants in higher Career Levels may be considered, on an exception basis, to come across laterally based on the applicants education and experience, and the scope of work being performed in the role.
