TEST EQUIPMENT ENGINEER

The Test Equipment Engineer designs, builds and operates facilities in support of engine, component, structural, and developmental testing at the SpaceX Rocket Development Facility. Join the team as a Mechanical Engineer and take ownership of systems and hardware used to prove out the next generation of American rockets.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engineering, design, analysis, material/component selection and procurement, construction, activation, and maintenance of test stands, tooling, and supporting infrastructure

  • Provide support and direction to technicians during construction, activation, and maintenance of stands and equipment

  • Support testing campaigns by operating ground propellant systems, reviewing data for system health, and modifying equipment or procedures as necessary

  • Develop novel ways to streamline site-wide processes and increase the reliability and efficiency of testing operations

  • Perform any additional tasks that ensure efficient and effective testing, as required

  • It is sometimes necessary to perform hands-on work in all environments (heat, cold, rain), occasionally in tight quarters or at heights

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or other engineering discipline

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering

  • 3 years of relevant experience in an industrial setting

  • Fundamental understanding, intuition, and aptitude of fluid and/or structural design and analysis

  • Creative ability to imagine and design from scratch, while retaining low cost, reliability, efficiency, and maintainability

  • Experience where quick-thinking and problem solving plays a critical role

  • Good response to challenges posed by short deadlines

  • Ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment

  • Acute attention to detail, ability to see interactions with other systems to avoid problems

  • Intermediate skill level using Windows Operating Systems

  • Intermediate skill level using Microsoft Office

  • Intermediate skill level using CAD (NX a plus)

  • Experience with high pressure and cryogenic fluid systems and components

  • Experience producing drawings for welders and machine shop fabrication

  • Machining, welding, other fabrication techniques, and general hands-on experience

  • Experience in FEA or CFD modeling and analysis, with ability to verify by simplified hand calculations

  • Piping and pressure vessel design experience per ASME code, work with flanges, gaskets, fasteners

  • Instrumentation, testing, data review and analysis, verification against a model

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • General physical fitness is required for some work areas, flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required

  • Physical effort including standing, lifting and carrying lightweight such as materials or equipment; must lift up to 30 pounds unassisted

  • Occasionally exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments- heat, cold, rain

  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise

  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends, which varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required

TEST OPERATIONS ENGINEER (RAPTOR) The Test Operations Engineer is responsible for ensuring engines and components have been tested and qualified to function in flight conditions. Our engineers specialize in the design and execution of unique development tests for combustion devices, valves, and pressure vessels on an accelerated schedule. This role offers a constant variety of diverse engineering challenges in a fast-paced, hands-on environment. Raptor Test Engineers have the opportunity to work on one of the world's most complex engines to date, a full flow staged combustion engine! Join the team and our journey to Mars and we solve new challenges presented by unknown frontiers. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Develop and execute tests on preburners, turbopumps, main injectors, igniter systems, high pressure valves, hot gas valves, and many other components * Accept repeated ownership of component and engine test campaigns; this includes test plan creation, stand equipment design/fabrication, new system activation, test operations, and data review * Provide daily direction and instruction to technicians to fabricate and integrate test articles and stand equipment * Develop and maintain test procedures, sequences, scripts, configuration files, and software * Design, build, modify, operate and troubleshoot data acquisition and control systems, wiring and instrumentation; DAQ systems are primarily National Instruments based * Design, build, modify, operate, and troubleshoot fluid systems; fluids include low to high pressure gases and rocket propellants * Design, build, modify, and operate mechanical systems; these include test stand support structures, heat exchangers, blast containment devices, and integration equipment * Work with design engineers to develop test methodology for high pressure, high temperature complex systems pioneering the architecture of Starship * Automate repetitive test operations; this includes identification of risks, failure modes, and mitigation techniques * Consistently find ways to improve existing processes BASIC QUALIFICATION: * Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering or other engineering field PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * Master's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering * 3+ years of hands on experience with mechanical systems, structural systems, propulsion systems, fluid systems, flight hardware or test operations * Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment, accomplishing tasks with limited resources at a rapid pace * Knowledge of hazardous systems (cryogenic, flammable, hypergolic, pyrophoric) * Knowledge of high pressure system design and handling * Familiarity with instrumentation and control components (pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, flow meters, load cells, relays, solenoid, pneumatic valves) * Experience using 3D modeling software (Siemens NX, Python, MATLAB, NI LabVIEW) * Experience reviewing data from anomalies and identifying root cause * Experience writing and maintaining test procedures and hardware work instructions * Ability to read, understand and apply technical manuals, data reports, mechanical schematics, electrical schematics and design specifications * Intermediate skill level using Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, OneNote) * Experience with at least one coding language (Matlab, Python, C, C++, Java, Visual Basic) ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Flight hardware is typically built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required * Physical effort including sitting or standing for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying weight such as materials or equipment (up to 30 lbs. unassisted) * Work performed in an environment with exposure to fumes, odors and noise * Occasionally exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments (heat, cold, rain) * Must be available to work extended hours and weekends, which varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required ITAR REQUIREMENTS: * To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
