Selected candidate will join a group that is responsible for supporting a wide range of electrical systems and equipment in the following areas: reactor plant instrumentation and control systems, steam and electric plant systems, auxiliary electrical/electronic systems, power distribution equipment and systems, and advanced power electronics. This position supports all fleet submarines, including Los Angeles, Ohio, Seawolf and Virginia classes; training platforms including S5W/S6G Moored Training Ships at NPTU Charleston, SC and the S8G Prototype at Kesselring, NY; and Multi Mission Platform (MMP)/Watchtower. This job will provide for an unusually large variety of work of differing durations, and increased responsibilities and independence as ability and experience supports.

Responsibilities include initial system and/or component design, ship alteration upgrades, and life cycle support. Candidates will function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks including overall technical quality, working in a team environment, maintaining schedules, awareness of budgets, and interfacing with Design and other engineering organizations and disciplines. Candidates will also be required to evaluate and provide technical resolution to system and component related questions and problems from Naval Shipyards, Navy forces afloat, land based prototypes, reactor plant prime contractors and NAVSEA engineering and program offices. Selected candidates will be expected to effectively communicate within the organization as well as with NAVSEA, prime contractors, Navy shipyards and equipment vendors.

Newly hired personnel will be assigned a mentor to assist in learning the above roles and responsibilities.

D457 is located in the off-shipyard Kings Highway office in Groton.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of 12 years of US Navy submarine experience as a qualified nuclear plant operator with an electrical or electronics background.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Engineering Watch Supervisor qualified.

  • Internal candidates must be from organizatons outside of operations (Casciano/Gabriel).

Preferred:

  • Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or higher.

  • Experience working in a private or Naval shipyard.

  • Nuclear Electrical Division leading chief petty officer experience.

  • Squadron Engineering experience.

  • Power conversion module operational experience.

  • Electric plant rotating machinery maintenance and repair experience.
