THIS IS A 30 MONTH TERM-LIMITED POSITION
History Colorado is seeking candidates for a term-limited National and State Register Historian who will serve as a key team member responsible for carrying out responsibilities associated with successful implementation of the National and State Register Programs in Colorado.
Funding for this position is guaranteed for thirty (30) months and/or until 1/31/2027, whichever comes first.
A primary area of focus during the three years will be the successful implementation of Colorado Heritage for All, a statewide initiative with the big goal of adding 150 sites to the National and/or State Registers by Colorado's Sesquicentennial in 2026 that are associated with historically marginalized and excluded communities in Colorado. The Colorado Heritage for All model includes engaging with historically marginalized communities to understand sites of importance to those communities, working with professional consultants, students, and community members to prepare nominations, and finding ways to further democratize the preparation of nominations so that designation of historic properties is deeply accessible to all.
Duties:
Effectively preparing, reviewing, editing, and rewriting (as needed) National and State Register nominations.
Proactively completing National and State Register nominations and nomination amendments in order to advance the Colorado Heritage for All initiative.
Providing guidance and formal determinations of eligibility to property owners, advocates, and/or potential nominators.
Providing technical information and assistance to property owners/stewards (both public and private) who are preparing nomination forms for submission to the State Review Board, the History Colorado Board of Directors, and the National Park Service.
Accurately reviewing historical/architectural survey forms to make preliminary and final National and State Register eligibility determinations.
Maintaining an excellent working knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply the Federal and State regulations for the National and State Register programs.
Providing direct technical assistance, as requested, to other History Colorado staff on eligibility determinations.
Traveling to potentially eligible properties across the state to offer support and guidance to property owners/stewards.
Delivering exceptional customer service, including providing program information via phone, email, and meetings (both "in community" and virtual) to a variety of stakeholders and others interested in historic preservation.
Broadening awareness generally, and in particular with historically excluded communities, about the National and State Register programs.
Building strong working relationships with History Colorado staff in other departments and continually identifying opportunities for collaboration to advance program goals and best serve the people of Colorado.
Representing History Colorado at meetings, conferences, and community workshops.
Assisting with other duties of the History Colorado Preservation Planning Unit, as assigned. Other duties may include assisting with the development and implementation of the statewide Preservation Plan, the Centennial Farms and Ranches Program, and the Roadside Marker Program.
