The Visual Arts Center is a creative, nurturing environment for students of diverse backgrounds to pursue individual pathways in Studio Arts and Visual Communication Design Technology. Faculty and programs stress a comprehensive, culturally relevant approach to fine arts and technology by teaching design and composition, materials and techniques, the exploration of personal creativity, and expression of student identity. The Studio Arts curriculum is designed with a cross-disciplinary approach to fine arts and communication design that includes Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degrees in Studio Arts and in Photography. Traditional and evolving approaches in a broad range of design and fine arts media, as well as exploration in contemporary trends, are essential to the development and maintenance of the program.

Typical duties include the following:

  • Teaching 3D Design, Sculpture I, II & III, and other materials-based classes such as Glass, Fibers, Drawing, Digital Drawing along with other Studio Arts transfer classes

  • Assisting in developing and maintaining all facets of the Studio Arts curriculum in an integrated course structure of AFA degrees (Studio Arts and Photography) within evolving Visual Arts and Film programs

  • Managing studios, curricular initiatives and strategic planning, portfolio assessment and coordination

  • Working with industry liaisons and mentors

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will advise students, assist with assessment of current instructional methods, develop programs and curricula, and participate in Shoreline governance, department, division and campus-related professional activities. Expectations of faculty include availability for shared departmental responsibilities beyond the teaching of scheduled classes and advising hours.

Faculty at Shoreline will have an array of students from differing programs in their classroom, including professional technical and university transfers. Shoreline seeks a candidate that can identify and mitigate the barriers to success that many students face and be passionate about creating an equitable learning environment that supports success for all students. Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Fine Art, Art Education or related discipline from an accredited institution

  • Two (2) years of experience with college-level teaching in Studio Arts or related fields.

Knowledge of

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technology

  • Classroom/studio safety and management

Skill in

  • Teaching 3D Design and Sculpture as well as in other Studio Arts transfer curricula such as drawing, installation art, digital art, and/or 2D Design.

  • Teaching through various modalities such as online, hybrid and in-person

  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of Studio Arts

  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience in teaching and developing coursework online

  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience in teaching multiple levels and media within the same learning environment and/or course.

  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness, competence, and responsiveness

  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College

  • Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities

  • Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently

  • Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

Physical Work Environment:

Work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods. Instructors typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment. Work in the Visual Arts Center building involves exposure to chemicals normally found in a graphic art, fine arts, photography, and a print production teaching facility. A portion of teaching assignments may be in the evening program and/or online.

Term of Employment/Salary:

This is a full-time, tenure track position, with a 172-day annual contract beginning September 19, 2024. Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
