The Sociology and Anthropology Department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Rowan University, in partnership with the Virtua-Rowan Health Equity Institute, are actively seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position at an open rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). This role centers on Demographics pertaining to Health Equity/Health Disparities, exploring the Social Determinants of Health that impact marginalized communities and populations, health systems, health delivery, and examining Access to the Conditions of Health and Wellness. We also seek a colleague whose research, teaching, and service will support and advance Rowan's core values of diversity and inclusive excellence.

We are in search of a sociologist equipped with robust quantitative skills specializing in social determinants of health, measurement techniques, and demography. Proficiency in contemporary regression methodologies, advanced survey tactics, utilization of extensive datasets, and data disaggregation for addressing health equity and wellness priorities is highly desirable.

Our commitment lies in pioneering research, delivering exceptional graduate and undergraduate instruction, and engaging in public service endeavors focused on combating racism, promoting social justice, and achieving equitable health outcomes. Candidates with interdisciplinary expertise, a proven track record of scholarly accomplishments, and a dedication to translating research into practical applications are particularly encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate is anticipated to establish independent, externally funded research initiatives while dedicating themselves to addressing the requirements of vulnerable populations. This entails confronting structural discrimination and removing obstacles in service delivery and wellness provision.

The role encompasses a blend of research and educational responsibilities. Candidates should anticipate collaborating with the Virtua-Rowan Health Equity Institute, Rowan's medical schools, healthcare professionals, research networks, and community partners. Furthermore, a collaborative approach with fellow researchers and team members is expected to drive the advancement of health equity at local, regional, and global levels.

Additional qualifications required for this role include:

  • A Ph.D. in Sociology or a related field with a sociological emphasis, with a conferral date no later than July 1, 2024.

  • Engagement in research, teaching, and service, as is customary across all roles at Rowan University.

  • Willingness to collaborate on research, grant writing, and teaching with department colleagues and Rowan's Medical Schools, Colleges, Centers, and Institutes.

  • Oversight and guidance of trainees, students, and fellow faculty members interested in health equity.

  • Contribution to developing and implementing curricula that promote advancements in health equity.

  • Dedication to enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

  • Participation in faculty governance, potentially assuming leadership roles within the Health Equity Institute.

  • For full and associate professors, a robust history of externally funded research is expected.

  • For assistant professors, a clear potential and promising outlook for securing substantial extramural funding is essential.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers a supportive environment for students pursuing degrees and certificates in Sociology, Anthropology, Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Human Services, and Social Work.
