JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University's College of Health and Human Development (HHD) invites scholars who utilize big data to address pressing issues in environmental health to apply for a tenure-track assistant professor position to begin summer/fall 2024. This position is part of the college's strategic hiring initiative in environmental health sciences (https://hhd.psu.edu/Environmental-Health-Sciences). This initiative embraces coupled human-natural systems and transdisciplinary approaches addressing critical environmental health challenges. The initiative builds upon our community of scholars' existing expertise in biological, behavioral, and social determinants of health, social science, human development, and public health -- thereby facilitating innovative research where the coupled human-environment systems intersect with individual and social determinants of health (e.g., age, gender, education, race, and income).

Individuals whose research utilizes state-of-the-art quantitative methodologies (including but not limited to machine learning, and deep learning) to analyze any type of large, high-dimensional data (including but not limited to geospatial data, exposomics or other molecular data, and precision environmental exposure measurements) in order to generate knowledge related to the relationship between pressing local, national, international, and/or global environmental challenges and human health and well-being are welcome to apply. Environmental determinants of particular interest are those related to climate change or extreme climate events as well as those that align with the interests of NIEHS (see: https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/topics/). Scholars whose program of research would synergize with research programs focused on health disparities and social determinants of health are of particular interest. Penn State University houses vast expertise and resources in environmental science (highlighted here) that can be leveraged in meaningful collaborations around environmental health.

The academic appointment can be in any of the College of Health and Human Development's eight academic units (https://hhd.psu.edu/research/college-department-research), including but not limited to the departments of Biobehavioral Health, Kinesiology, Nutrition Sciences, Human Development and Family Science, and Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management. The college is one of the larger academic units at the University, home to approximately 160 full-time faculty and 200 staff members who serve approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 300 graduate students in residence at its University Park campus, as well as 850 online students at Penn State's World Campus. In addition to its eight academic units the college houses five research centers, and the college's investigators lead projects supported by $68 million in external funding, approximately $18 million of which is NIH support.

This faculty position will be co-funded by the Institute of Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), which fosters both high-impact computational and data science methodologies as well as their applications to address a broad range of scientific and societal challenges, multifaceted models, and their societal impacts. ICDS supports a vibrant community of scholars, which includes more than 30 co-hired faculty and over 300 affiliated researchers with access to ICDS advanced research computing infrastructure and a cadre of technical experts, research scientists, and engineers.

Co-hires will have the opportunity to participate in ICDS interdisciplinary research initiatives in Artificial Intelligence and Data Sciences, with a focus on health sciences applications, and contribute to innovative graduate and undergraduate education and training in Data Sciences, Informatics, AI, and related areas. Further information on the institute and its co-hires can be found at: http://icds.psu.edu.
