POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION

Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks is hiring assistant tennis coaches for youth tennis classes, located at various county parks. We are currently seeking an assistant coach for fall, spring and summer classes. Fall, spring, and summer classes will run weekday afternoons from 4:00p.m.

  • 7:30p.m. and weekends varying between the hours of 8:00a.m.

  • 6:00p.m. Fall classes will run September

  • November. Spring classes will run April

  • June. Summer class will run June-August. Additional daytime opportunities will be available during Summer Camps, which run June through August.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Candidates must be reliable, mature, courteous, professional and have knowledge/experience playing or instructing tennis. Must have good communication skills, be comfortable working with children and be able to work flexible evening and weekend hours.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Performs natural resource intermediate technical level work under general supervision. Work typically involves assisting in open space and forest conservation law implementation and compliance by performing inspections, responding to complaints, and carrying out public information programs. Work may also include serving as a natural resource specialist on land use, wildlife, ecology or forestry matters. May represent the County in dealing with developers and contractors about open space issues. STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE $20.38 - $21.64 $42,398 - $45,015 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. * Participates in all aspects of field maintenance related to the Department's Forest Conservation Programs. * Assists with the implementation of the Stream Releaf, Turf to Trees and other public outreach Forestry Programs. * Assists with the annual volunteer tree planting events in the spring and fall. * Responsible for performing maintenance on forest conservation sites including the control of exotic/invasive species, applying pesticides, mowing forest conservation sites, keeping records and conducting annual survival inspections. * Collects field data using a hand-held GPS unit and transfers data to MapInfo GIS program. * Responds to inquiries from citizens while working throughout the County. * Travels throughout the county unsupervised to accomplish forest management practices and direct work of contractors. * Performs various maintenance functions such as mowing, clearing, seeding, brush cutting, operationof pick-up truck, trailers, side by sides, medium to large tractors, chain saws, etc. is also required. * Assists Natural Resource Manager and Natural Resources Specialist with inventories on park land and open space. * Assists the Natural Resources Specialist in maintaining the Emergency Chainsaw Trailer and Inventory. * Maintaining the Natural Resources shop, keeping it clean and organized. * Responsible for identifying and applying good sustainability practices into all aspects of Department operations. * This position is considered essential and will be required to work emergency situations to include staffing the Department Operations Center. * Serves on committees as assigned SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Associates Degree and two years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: * Minimum of two-year college level course work in natural resource management, ecology, forestry, or other related field is preferred. * Basic computer skill plus proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and basic GIS and MapInfo skills. * Experience using hand held GPS units for data collection. * Experience operating tractors, utility vehicles and hauling equipment with pick-up trucks and trailers. * Experience handling, mixing and applying herbicides safely. * Strong knowledge and experience in identifying both native and non-native woody and herbaceous plants.
